NEW CUSTOMS REGULATIONS.
The Commissioner of Customs notifies that on aud after the Ist March next the following regulations, issued by the Commissioners of Her Majesty's Customs in the United Kingdom, relative to calculating the strength of sphits, will be adopted in New Zealand, and 1 that Officers of Customs throughout the Colony h<ive been instructed to give effect to same j— - That in all cases the strength of spirits over-proof be computed on the quantities so ascertained aad charged to the tenth of a gallon. The following method of calculating the strength of spirits, by which the proof quantiiy in any package is ascertained by one operation, is to be adopted : — Add the strength over-proof to 100, and multiply that sum by the liquid quantity, when the total quantity of spirits at proof will be ascertained, as in the following examples— . day. In breadstuffc, Victorian flour is quoted at £15 to £15 10s, and we hear qf two or three iifty-ton papels, besides one line of a hundred tons, having changed hands at within our quotations. Wheat continues scarce j a small parcel of Portland w.is placed at 0s lO^d, and trifling lots are disposed of at from Qg 3d to 6s 7d. Maige is firmer j inquiry has improved, and sales, can be made at 3s 7d to 3s Sd. We note a good -demand for Calcutta cornsacks, which are scarce, leading to the sale of some forty bales, at close on i3s. Dundecs are neglected, and quotations of 12s Gd. can scarcely be maintained. Stoplis of Java rice are very lyw, and this circumstance has in som.e degree attracted supplies from the pthcr colonies. A parcel of (iOO bags, arrived from Adelaide, was 'disposed of "under the hammer at the long figures of £29 10s to £3,0 103." Sales of caustic s.oda are reported afc ijp t°. £-"• Kerosene oil is very heavy, and there is nothing doing pending the receipt of advices via Piinamn. The quantity stated to be coming forward amounts to 19,000 cases, though a much larger quantity was published in a Sydney telegram this morning ; the error, ho.weyer, was qf too ftbvious a nature to cause inconvenience. A shipment of currants has changed hands at 3£d. We ob : serve that sqme 1,350 barrels will be offered f>r sale to-morrow. Tolmccoes are in good request. A line of 35 liulf-tierces of Black Swan twist was placed on private terms ; about 500 packages of various sorts are advertised for auction sale on Wednesday. Teas of good quality are wanted, and numerous sales are now pending, at prices rising to 2s 2d. A s.mall parcel of malt find a buyer at 10s 3d. A parcel of assorted paints was quitted at £30. Bulk beer has b.een more wanted, and we learn of about 100 hhds. of Bass's No. 4 having been placed at £8 5.5.
