STAMP DUTIES ACT. The following is the new Stamp Duties Act passed in the General Assembly pf New Zealand last session, and ■which came intc force on the Ist Jan : — SCHEDULE I. Containing tiie Duties on Deeds ani other Instruments delating to Tkansactions between living persons.. £ S. d Agreement or any minute pr memorandum of any agreement under hand only, where the matter thereof shall b,e of the value of L2O or upwards ; whether the same shall only be evidence of a contract or obligar tory on the parties from its being a written instrument, together with every schedule receipt or other matter put or endorsed therepn or annexed thereto 0 10 Provided always, that where divers letters shallbe offered in evidence to prove any agreement between the parties who shall have written such letters, it shall be sufficient if any of such letters, shall be stamper' with a duty of twp shillings and sixpence. Bills of Exchange— Inland Bill pf Exchange Draft p,r Order for the payment tP the bearer or to order at any time ptherwise than on demand of any suni pf money npt exceed-: ingLpQ ' .., Q1 0 Dittp, np.t exceeding LIQO ...0 2 0 And where the sum sha}l exceed LIOO, then for. every LSO, and alsp for fractional part pf Lob Q 1 0 Fpreign Bill pf Exchange drawn in but payable out pf the colony of New Zealand — Ifcdrawn singly or. otherwise than, in a set of two or more (q,) If drawn in sets pf two, then fpr eyery bill pf each set where the sum payable shalj not exceed LSO ' ... q a (3 And where it shall exceed LSO and not exceefl LIOO ... Q \ 0 And where tjie same shall exceed LIOO, then fpr every L{>o or any fractional part pf LSO 0 0, C If drawn in sets of three *pr more for every bill of each set where the sum payable thereby shall not exceed LSQ ... 0 0 4 And where it shall exceed LuO and not exceed LIOO ... 0 0 8 An(j \yhere the same shall exceed LIOO, then fpr every LSO and also any fractional part of LSO C 0 4 Exemptions from the foregoing duties on bills of exchange, afl debentures and treasury bills issued by the Government of New Zealand. Al} drafts or orders for the payment of any sum of money to the bearer on demand drawn upon any banker, person, or company, are exempt from the foregoing duties but are subject to the duty of Id charged upon drafts orjorders. Bill of Exchange drawn out of the colony, but endorsed or negotiated within the colony, the same duties as on a bill of exchange drawn within the colony, and payable within the colony (b) Promissory Note, for the payment in any other mannci than to the bearer, on demand, of any sum of money not exceeding L 25 0 0 6 Exceeding L 25, not exceeding LSO 0 10 Promissory Note, for the payment either to the bearer, on demand, or in any other manner than to the bearer, on demand, of any sum of money exceeding LSO and not exceeding LIOO ...0 2 0 Where the sum shall exceed LIOO then for every LSO, and fractional part of LSO ... 0 1 0 Exemptions from the foregoing duties on promisory notes, but not from auy other duty to which the same may be liable. AJI promissory notes, for the payment of money on demand, issued by any Bank or Banking Company in New Zealand authorised to issue such notes, and making such returns, and paying such compositions as is in this Act respectively; mentioned. A 1 bills, drafts, or ordeis, or promissory notes for the payment by any Bank or Banking Company of any sum of money, though not made payable to the hearer or to order, and whether delivered tp the payee or not, and all writings or documents entitling any person to the payment by any Bank or Banking Company of any suni of money, whether the person to whom payment is to be made shall be named or designated therein or not, or whether the- shall be delivered to him or not, shall respectively be deemed to be bills, drafts, or prdersfor the payment of money chargeable with Stamp Duty, as if the same had been made payable to bearer or to order. Bill of Lading, or receipt in lieu thereof from master, mate, or ageut of any vessel, for any goods, merchandise, or effects to be carried to any place beyond the boundaries of the colony — for every such bill of lading, or receipt, or copy thereof . 1 0 Conveyance— Of auy kiuA or description whatsoever, iipon the sale of any property in respect of the principal or only writing, whereby the property sold shall be conveyed to or vested in the purchaser, or any other person or persons by his direction (except transfers expressly provided for by this act) — Where the pui'chase or consideration money therein or thereupon expressed shall not exceed LSO 0 5 0 And where the same shall exceed L.s.o, 'and not exceed LIOO ... 010 0 And where the same shall exceed ' LIOOJ then for every LSO, and any fractional part of LSO ...0 5 0 The consideration must be truly expressed in words upon each principal deed of conveyance, and if value be given in stock or other security, its value must in like manner be set forth in fid . " ' . [ When consideration is in Government or other stock or debentures, the duty is payable on the average selling price at the time of the conveyance.
