Gentlemen — I sincerely regret that since I accepted your very flattering requisition, circumstances have occurred in my business that necessitate my absence from this Colony immediately, and for some time, and 1 consequently must deny myself the honor you intended inc. In reluctantly withdrawing from the forthcoming Election for the Council, it is a source of great satisfaction to me (and I trust to every person interested in the welfare of this town) to see Gentlemen in the persons of Messrs Harrison andDavies coming forward to represent us, whose ability and personal interest in tho town, as also the public services hitherto rendered to the district by each in their respective capacities, will, I hope, be a sufficient guarantee (if returned) that we will be ably and honestly represented. In conclusion, I beg to thank you for the expression of your opinion towards myself, and assure you that, after my return, no personal consideration will prevent me from devoting such time (aa ought to be expected from every citizen) for the benefit of the town in any capacity wherein you may deem my services useful.
