Chkistchurch. — The Press, of the 6th reportg as follows : — During, the past \v;eek there has been no transactions calling for special mention, all parcels quitted being small, and no indication of operations being extended in magnitude. The majority of stocks held are larger than our limited market requires, but should country prospects continue to improve as they have done lately, we may look for second fiands operating more freely. Wheat is being sought after, 6s per bushel having been offered on Saturday for a large parcel of hist season's; 5s 6d is offered for good new, delivery to be made within three weeks, aud several lots changed hands at that price. Flour is quoted from Ll6 to LlB per ton ; bran at L 3 10s, and sharps L 4 10s. No important changes have occurred in the markets, and except an increased firmness in some articles there is, in the value of staples, but little alteration to note. The transactions during the past week in breadstuffs have been only for current requirements, prices remaining stationary. The disposition to speculative purchases, noticeable while the market had an improving tone, has subsided. Closing prices are — for Adelaide, L2l ; and for Provincial, Ll7 10s to LlB. Wheats are quoted at 6s Od, and cats at 2s 9d. Melbourne.— The Argus, cjE the. 28th ult., reports as follows ;— In the import markets business generally maintains a very quiet aspect. There has been no desire to speculate evinced by the larger dealers, and stock-taking is too near at hand to admit of many purchases being made even for trade purposes. In breadstuffs there tire no sales whatever to report ; and though we retain former, quotations of'Viutorian flour — say Ll6 10s to'Ll7— the market is scarcely s,o fi/m. Good samples of wlieat ; realise 6s 9d to 7a but there are few parcels , offering. The high prices realised of late for : oass have had some effect in inducing holders to offer more freely at 5s to 4s 3d, though we hay« not heard of any transactions taking pla«e.. Maize is exceedingly firm. Sales of parcels are made at 4s to 4s 11 id, and up to 4s 3d is obtained for smaller parcels. The damaged and faulty portion of the Woodbine's cargo of teas was disposed of by auction, and realised satisfactory prices. The quantity, sold comprised 299, chests, 521 halfchests, and 265 bo3ses, There is very little , doing in sugars ; we understand, however, ; that 6000 bags are advertised for public sale on Monday. In liquids, we learn at a parcel of twenty Imtts of common sherry in ;:s sorted casks having mut with a purchaser at L2l. Sales of Htmnessy's p;ile brandy in bulk are mentioned at 7s. Buss's No. 4 ale has b«cn sold at L 8 ss, and small parcels of ilarrian's have realised a similar figure. We take tho following frqin the A runs I ■ - * - - v? .i ■ » . *j of the 4th inst. : — In the import markets business continues to maintain an aspect of great quietness, and | there is little tq report of any 'special conse- ! quence. A small parcel for shipment was |. quitted at 10s in bond. Provisions are w.uitud for >iew Zealand, an^l a fair quantity of cheese has been got rid of, at equal to 14d and 144 d. A demand has sprung up for cot Fee, stocks haying apparently been reduced to a much more manageable compass. A line of about tif teen tons of and Native' Ceylon has been quitted at a figure supporting our trade quotations of 9;} d for the former, and B.^l for the latter. Though there is nothing doing iv kerosone oil, holders are Jinn in their ideas. The accounts by telegraph report adeelinp in the pr.'gj of this oil in America, but this has been more than counterbalanced by an advance in freight and a reduction in the price of gold. Advices received, however, have bcreti far too meagre to influence the market as yet. In liquids we hear of sales of common port wine at'L2l. Blood's stout has loiuid buyers at §s b'd.
