EARTHQUAKE IN JAVA.
SIX HUNDRED LIVES LOST. We learn from the Batavia " Handelsblad" that on the morning of the 10th June, about half-past four o'clock, a serious earthquake took place in Java, and caused great damage to property there. The course of the earthquake, was from S.W. to N.E., and afterwards in a contrary direction. The earthquake is attributed to the mountainous volcanos, Merapie, Bromo, Valiran, and Someroe. The town of Dajocja was entirely destroyed, and the value of the property is estimated at four millions of rupeer. At Dajocja, 336 persons wei'e killed, among whom were twelve Europeans. Ac other places numerous establishments, godowns, etc., were destroyed, including the fortress. Before the earthquake had begun, the water of some of the rivers seemed quite warm and of a reddish color; and, whatis yet more strange, they overflowed their banks as the sea does at high tide. Agriculturists in the field were seen to sink as much as five feet into the earth, from which issued clouds of smoke. The road to Solo split in several places to the breadth of two feet. We learn that the total number of those killed is 600, including nearly 100 Europeans. A whole family of Europeans were killed in oue hoiise.
