Narrow Escape. — Yesterday morning a man, -who is engaged at the excavation, was employed in swimming some horses in the Lyttelton Harbor for the purpose of washing them, by the works (close to Mr Gmbb's slip) He had ridden in on two or three, and returned in safety. One animal, however, which he afterwards ■tG'le in, became restive, and on finding itselt out of its depth, commenced to kick and pliuige^^^i.lyi_^\ succeeded in dismounting its ridery wfio;' E K3tHfr§fi?g^i*]^ to swim, almost immediately sunk/^Sn* rising again to the surface the horse struck him, and he 'sunk again. Boats were put off from the wharf and one from the Blip ; the latter succeeded in reaching the man as he was sinking for the third time. He had'sufiicient strength left to grasp' one of tlie oars, and was taken into the boat in an exhausted state. The name of the man who rescued Mm is Ross. — Press, 36th inst. - -
