" The following is an extract from the Melbourne Age, 21st November, 1866:— The Sideboard is nine feet high, of the same width, and about three feet in depth. The carved ornaments with which it is very _^ elaborately surrounded, and which - cost "'-" £300, serve to illustrate, in a measure, the past history, rise and progress of the colony. The centre doors in front of the sideboard bear large-sized carved representations of the emu and kangaroo, which stand out in full relief. The pedestal on the right represents an aboriginal with a dingo at His heels, forming the centre piece of a rustic frame of decayed timber, in and around which are specimens of the animals, birds and reptiles peculiar to the colony. The left pedestal is similarly carved, but the centre piece is a female aboriginal with, a piccaninny at her back and carrying a ring-tailed opossum^in her left hand. The pedestals are carried'" «^ above, the sideboard, where the design changes. The centre panel is surmounted by an eagle, and represents "Commerce," and the smaller and subordinate panels, the pastoral and mining interests of the colony, { the former illustrated by the process of sheep shearing and the latter by a battery of stampers and a digger ; the interstices of the panels representing the agricultural interest, in a man binding a sheaf of corn, a horse, a bullock, and a plough. On the right and left pedestals supporting the centre panel, are figures of the Goddess ''Plenty," with her. T^^cornucopeia overflowing with corn and fruit and flowers, whilst the* pilasters are intertwined- with clusters: of pears,, apples, and other fruits, and surmounting the whole a cockatoo with expanded wings. These are the principal ornaments of the carved work, but there is much that is subordinate to, while in keeping with the general design, which must be seen to be appreciated. The 'i&m internal fittings-are equally appropriate. On ~ : flH the left hand is a wine case or cellaret drawer, which, funs upon rollers. It is lined with lead, and fitted witK cups to receive the de- ■. ; canters and bottles, and above this drawer are dessert trays. Proper regard has been - paid to the ventilation of the cellaret and the fruit shelves. Thejt"/^- JLUJl^atainß rii
