MR G. DONNE AND THE ARGUS.

(To the. Editor of the Grey JRivtr Argut,) SiR-r-When en route, from Nelson a day or two ago, I observed in the Grey Jliver _ Argus (J think of the 28th ult.), an extraafc-j> of a speech delivered by Mr White in.the^k Nelson Provincial Ooungil, which; speech % contained an attack upon the member for Cobden, Mr Donne. The garnishing, or 1 sensational introductory heading, to the said speech, as sepved up in the (?reyjsiw Argus, I am, of course, indebted to v that paper for. This, however-, it might not . havq been worth while to have referred to, if the Grey Rivtr Argus had only, at the same time have given Mr Donne's reply, in which cage the^readers of the Argus would have seen that the sentiments indulged in by Mr White were not such as were shared by the Council.. I think it will be goiiceded that the public as well as the member for Oobden have a right to expect to be dealt honestly and fairly with in such matters by a public newspapers, an 4 unless the conductor of the G-my River Ay^us, in this instance, is influenced hy personal or other unworthy motives, J opine he will be disposed t<> do the awioKfc Zionora&Je, It i^ with thiß impression, at least, that I have ventuped to enclose tho accompanying newspaper report of the proceedings in question, lest such should by any possibility have escaped the optics of the Grey River oracle. I may be allowed to add, that I have been too long personally associated with newspapers to affect an indifference to journalistic criticism, and when entering upon active politics was prepared fop the reception of what may be termed the nsual doses of literary goading, but scarcely of the character such as the Grey River Argus in a leading article in a more recent issue of that newspaper, thought proper to dc r vote to "the' member far Oobden. It is to be regretted, 1 think, that the generally highrtoned Grey River- organ should have so far travelled out of its way, and per= mitted its columns to be used for the gratification of individual, political, or personal aninnis— as in the case to which, referenge i§ made. ." lam, GeORQJE DONNEj Camp street, Brighten*, ■--■■ ■- - Aug. 13, 1867 ; . -■ :■
