THE REPORTED DEATH OF DR LIVINGSTONE.
The Ceylon Times has the following paragraph : — " We deeply regret to learn from an up-countxy correspondent the death of the celebrated African explorer and missionary, Dr Livingstone, who it appears was assassinated by the natives in the neighborhood of Lake Nyanza. No particulars have reached \xs, and. the above brief intelligence came to hand by the last Mauritius mail in the postscript to a letter, where the news is mentioned as having been just received by the Governor from Dr Kird, of Zanzibar, who vouched for the truth of it. This may account for no mention of the intelligence being in any of the newspapers from Port Louis." " The circumstantial nature of the statement leaves little room," remarks the CohvmbaObsener, "we fear, to doubt the truth. of the report ; and we suppose the name of Livingstone will now have to be added to the long x'oll of the myrtyrs of African research. The only hesitation we feel is from the fact that Bombay is so intimately connected with Zanzibar, and intercourse so frequent, that the intelligence ought to have been received in the Wesiernjj>j\3sidency i "
