Dunedi.n,— The Daily Times of tbe sth inst. reports as follows ! — For a short time past business has worn an improving aspect, and at present, though not much of activity is apparent, a fair and steady trade is doing. The season for heavy imports of foreign produce ?s over, and the imports of goods from Bj'itish ports will, foi the next few months, be light, consequently, though stocks of all staple goods are ample, the market has a firm tone, and there is rather a disposition to hold parcels coming forward than to accept of other than satisfactory prices. The principal transactions during the late week havj been in breadstuffs, teas, sugar-*, and malt liquors, privately, and of sugars by auction ; the last named item, sugars, exhibiting in the rates realised an allowance of fully five per cent, upon previous rates ; of the heavy parcel offered nearly all sold. On the 31st ult , the Isabella, from Mauritius, came to hand, but it is understood her cargo will not be immediately offered. The sales of bread? tuffs, have been chiefly oi South American flour, of which the supply has in some measure compensated for the falling off in Chilian and Californian, The price for which the flour of the Flying Buck's cargo was sold was not allowed to transpire, but the wheat realised 5s per bushel. The business done in Provincial flour, for which there is no speculative enquiry, is good, but made up of numerous small parcels. Present values for trade lots are — Adelaide, Lls ; Provincial, LlO 10s to Lll. Good congous have been placed at maintained prices, and the shipments of new brew ales to hand have found buyers. Sinclair's bacon and hams arc held for Is 4d, duty paid ; and a shipment of Campbell's bacon has been placed at Is lijd to Is 2d. The other chief items in provisions, viz., butter and cheese, are at sustained prices, but without any particular demand. Spirits have not been much dealt in, Henncssy's and Martell's pale, in bulk, remain at 7s 3d to 7s 6d ; by auction, the same brands in case realised 25s 9d, but privately rather a better figure was obtained far a larger parcel. Building materials are dull. Timber of many descriptions greatly overstocked, but in one or two kinds bare ; oi flooring boards there is a great excess of some sizes, but none of others. The galvauised iron to hand has not been taken up quickly, but the value remains unchanged. Candles have given way ; there is scarcely any present enquiry, but some reaction may be expected both in candles and kerosene, within the next two or three weeks. Blasting powders have been placed at 7£d to S£d, according to brands, Th.c commercial intelligence to hand this morning, per Tararua, from Melbourne, is favorable to ant improvement in several minor items, but not so to any alteration in the values of leading goods.
