The Jjijticlion times, of with some signs o(.
an improved demand for foods, and some I little activity was displayed in our markets. The trad&, however, buy very cautiously and sparingly, and appear inclined to sort up their winter stocks with the smallest quantities possible. The following articles have been more in request, viz. : Good medium congous, in chests, half-chests, and boxes, good light grainy sugars and Company's pieces (the latter having advanced in 'Australia considerably), crushed loaf sugar ; brandies have been also more inquired for, as also rum and whisky in bulk. Kerosene is in more demand ; bottled stout is getting scarce and wanted, especially Guinness. Confectionary (Keillor's), currants, salmon, and sardines have also met with a fair sale. Our stocks of general merchandise are too large to hope for any improvement iv prices for some time, but we hope to see more business doing and a better feeling existing during the winter months. The fourth of the month passed over very fairly, and we have heard of no fresh failures. The mail, via Panama, has not yet arrived, so that the corrse of post has been lost. The money market is not quite so easy, and some little pressure is being felt, but a very fair amount of discount aocommodation is being afforded by the bank.", There is an abundance of capital seeking first-dags investments. The rates of discount and exchange remain as before.
