A Assault. — George Somner was charged by Joseph Jackson with having committed a violent assault upon the plaintiff on Saturday last. It appeared that the assault arose out of a betting account between the parties. The defendant, who had won 1/2 from the plain- ! tiff at the . Grey-mouth races, called on tho ( plaintiff for a settlement, which the plaintiff __was quite willing to agree to ; but there was a business account between the parties which left a balance to the plaintiff, which the de/rf*«<fcmt refused to recognise. It was stated •"^lat the defendant seiz&l the jilainfciff by the heard, and committed the assault com] ilained of. The defendant denied the assault, but the Magistrate found the assault proved, and inflicted a fine of a guinea and costs. DisoKDEitTA' CoNin : a.— James Mursen, for this offence, was fined 10s, with the alternative of one week's impvisonment. On a second charge of assaulting and resisting the police in the execution of their duty, tlie prisoner was committed to gaol for 14 days ■with hard labor. B.reacu.os Dog Okmvaxck— P. Harrison and John Bannon, for having unregistered dogs, were each fined 20s and costs.
