COMMERCIAL.
Wkstpokt.— -The )i r e*fport. Times, of the 22nd inst, reporfe^as follows : — Messrs Jones r and Jervis report: — The adyent of a local journal amongst us affords an opportunity of informing the commercial world o^thc business transacted and prices realised during the current week. Mr 'i'h'oin's herd of 100 sheep, horses, &c, were .purchased by Mr Blain for LOSO, The market cannot be said to be overstocked either Avith mutton, beef, lambs, or pork. Provisions are plentiful, but realise fair marketable prices. 1 1 has been difficult to keep pace Avith the demand for timber, which has been very scarce. Mr .Robertson's. cargo changed hands at IGs Messrs .Hanson and Clark also purchased the cargo of the Florence. The Excelsior is lying in the river with some 30,000 feet mixed kauri timber, so for some time at least avc have no fear of dearth. Iron is scarce ; some small shipments have arrived within tiie last day or two, but mostly to order for buildings under way. Otaco. — The following report is from tho Daily Times of thel"th instant : — Throughout the week just closed business has woie a tolerably cheerful aspect, though of the numerous transactions which have come under notice very few have been of any magnitude. Orders from the interior, and for dispatch coastwise, have, been to hand to rather more than the usual aA r erage ; and in the town trade there has been something more of a demand for summer goods. In the Hour market the demand for breadstuff's continues light, and not exceeding actual requirements, .prices remaining without change. For sugars there has been a fair enquiry, rates keeuiit'j up to recent quotations. Teas have had some attention, fine and good congous selling at maintained prices, and boxes being iv demand at full rates. The tone of the last advices from Melbourne and Sydney is such as to render it improbable that any teas will decline in value. Malt liquors have, Avith the exception of stout, been very dull ; the value of stout, which slightly ikivb wayla.-t we. lc, has rallied, and there, are buyers at present ([notations. Ales, both iv hulk and bottle, are very slow of sale, and importers' are. obliged to quit their goods in almost; retail lot*. Cornsaeks have improved a little. Malt is also tinner ; both articles are selling. Provisions, chieily bacon ami hams, have changed hands at prices showing a shade only of improvement — the sales made have principally been for export Importers an now anxious to quit their earliest shipments, and a very much improved demand must take place to allow of prices at present altering. Butter and cheese are about as last given. The auction sales of general merchandise haA'e not during the past feAV days presented anything calling for notice.
