On the 10th of December a murderous attack was made by a woman named Sarah Vance on her husband Leslie Vance at Daylesford. : ■ The weapon she used was a tomahawk, with which she inflicted a deep wound on the temple, and fractured her unfortunate victim's skull. The man is not expected to recover, and his dying depositions have been taken. . The woman has confessed to the assault. It is presumed that jealousy was the cause of the deed. The unhappy couple lived near to the spot whore Margaret Graham's house used to stand, at the west end of Albertstreet. Mr. Fuller has been elected Mayor of Adelaide by a largo majority. There was a very exciting contest. Ho was afterwards taken through the city in a carriage drawn by the citizens. Public feeling has been aroused at Adelaide by the discovery of the fact that Mr. C S Heare, superintendent of convicts was in the habit of relusudng prisoners before the expiration of the time of their sentence without the knowledge of the Government. The meeting of creditors of Messrs Younyhusband, juu., & Co., of Adelaide, was held on the Oth instant. The liabilities were L(i5,000 ; assets, L 17 ,000. It appears they have been hopelessly insolvent for ten j'ears past. Several old settlers are utterly ruined by this failure. The estate is to be wound up under inspection. The mail from Bourke and Lower Macquaric was attacked on the 7th hist., at Narraiuine, twenty-five miles below Dubbo. Mr. Grenfell, Crown Lands Commissioner for Bonrke, who was a passenger, resisted and fired. The bushrangers returned the tire, wounding Mr Grenfell. The robbers were beaten off, and the mail arrived safe in Dubbo. Mr Greenfell died on the 9th inst. Wool is being shipped from Melbourne to New York in the hope of opening up a new market. The Isabella Hercus has sailed with a full cargo. A woman named Grist attempted to commit suicide near Maldon, and almost succeeded also in murdering her daughter. She proposed to her daughter to go to a waterhole for the purpose of fetching water. The young woman agreed, and they proceeded over the old shafts for the purpose. On arriving at a shaft some sixty feet in depth, the unfortunate woman, turning to her daughter, said "Well, Maria, I think we've had enough poverty lately, don't you think so' too ; what do you say of our ending it togother !" Seizing her daughter's dress, she then jumped into theshatt. Fortunately for the young woman she was enabled to hold on with one hand to a sapling, and thus prevented herself from shariug the fate of the would be murderess and suicide. Her screams raised an alarm, and her mother was brought to the surface — not dead, but much injured. Slio had broken a leg in two places., and was otherwise injured. She was removed to the Maldon Hospital. The latest advices from Adelaide state that the Assembly has agreed to a bill to 'borrow L 150,000 for the construction of a new reservoir. Twenty-five thousand pounds are also t<> be expended during next year in the improvement of the port. The first shipment of manufactured sugar from New Caledonia arrived at Sydney, on the 12th instant.
