jv r'CnßtsrcHUßCii. — Tfe f Press of , the lpth ; iust. reports as follows \i- — •• ■•. }" l s The/-iniport- roarketJis 'quiet/ and .little biisuie^slhas been done/dnring v the paist' week in toKvnJrade ; up-country parcels are being despatched by return wool (bcays, but the whole trade done is less than could have fairly been.anticipated at. this season of the year. The Blue Jacket is still unloading, and consignees complain of the difficulty of getting their goods. The Leichardt is now overdue, and as she brings many articles short shipped per Blue Jacket, many seasonable goods N which ought to be to hand will arrive too late for the market. -Colonial produce is still as quietus ever ; flour of all .qualities' being quitted . in small lots, and there is no appearance of more active markets, A cargo of Chilian wheat is shortly expected, which will glut the market, and prevent any speculative business being done m breadstuffs. The cattle market is not .guitted,..and good conditione.l beasts of all descriptions arc in fair demand.; for fine quiet milch cows, and fat- animals fit for the butcher, a largo enquiry exists. Fine milch cows are quitted from L2O to . L 23, inferior quiet animals, Llo to Ll9 ; store cattle from L 9 to Ll2. The market on Saturday was very quiet, and few sales were effected. '"■' Wellington.— -The independent of, the 15th inst. gives the following monthly report : — Since bui last summary business still continues in a very dopressed state. It seems almost impossible to make sales of large parcels, buyers only purchasing in the smallest possible lots. The Napier has arrived after a very long passage of 215 days, cind her large cargo will only increase cmr already overcrowded Avarehbuscs, and tend still further to reduce importers' prices. ! Monetary affairs appear satisfuctory^although there have been -some considerable number of failures during tlie last month or two! The unoasiiiess now seems to have passed away ; and ■ the Banks have not increased their rate of discount as was antici- i pated. • Wool is now coming in freely, and the Asterope -will be a 1 f till shij) at her advertised date. The. quality of the wool tlii3 yoar is a good .average, and prices, are fully equal to ! last year; This will considerably benefit our up-country friends. It is almost useless to give quotations at present, for importers' prices vary so considerably, but nearly every article has to be sold atrcdnccd. prices, find in many instances at rates that must leave a loss to the importer. Bulk ale varies from LS 10s to LI) 7s Gd. A few shipments have ; been landed; lately of favorite brands, and in very bad condition. Bulk Porter— Good brandc/", L 7 153 per .hhd ia asked ;biit in some instances as low as L 6 has been taken, as at present the trade has fri.ven up using this article. The increase of duty on the foregoing goods has caused a good deal of; stir amongst the colonial brewers, and nearly every vessel, arriving from Nelson firings large 'quantity of alein hhd. It is iiQW goncrally allowed .'that ifc was a; ; great mistake in the Govcrnihcnt increasing the duty; on this article,, Bottled Ale and Porter— ll eavy stocks and nearly unsaleable ; price from 9s to 12s, duty paid.
