Melbourne.—T he Art/us, qt the 27th ult., repoits as follows : — In the import markets a quiet day has been passed, trade generally not having evinced much animation, although the middlemen and country dealers report that a manifest improvement has peached them, orders having begun to come fnr,ward mudi more freely. In the market for breadstuff's attention was chiefly occupied by the sale of the Chili's cargo of Chilian wheat. 8000 bushels were disposed of, as per sample (said to be slightly weavily), at 3s lid to 4s lid. 3000 bags of badly damaged Chilian flour were at the same time quitted at L 5 15?. In Adelaide flour business is almost at a standstill. Quotations, however, are retained at Ll3 to Ll3 10s for first-class town brands, and Ll2 for country brands. In horsefeed we 1 note sales of maize in parcels at 3s lid cash, and 4s terms has also been accepted. Malt begins to attract more attention. We hear of a couple of bins, one in tanks and tlie other in bags, having changed hands at 9.?. Trade sales up to 9s 3d and 9s Gil have also been effected. Hops of 186">'s growth have been quitted at is lftd. ' Further transa- : *tions in currants continue to be reported at 4.J<l. Sales of candles to a moderate extent have come under our notice at lOf-d. A good trade enquiry has been experienced for cheese at 13d for fine qualities and small sizes, which are most wanted. At auction, the Electra's cargo of Mauritius sugars was submitted to public competition, and of 6205 bag?, which comprised the cargo, some 3770 bass were disposed of at prices which establish an advantage pf 20s per ton pn former prices. Rations brought 25s to 17s ; brown, 30s. Counters were sold at prices rising from 31s for low to 3Gs Gd for finest. Yellow crystals were quitted at 34s to 36s Gd, while low to fijiest white crystals ranged from 36s 9d to 4ls Gd. In kerosene there is little to report of best brands. Sales of second brands are mentioned at 3s 1 id. We have of late heard of numerous complaints against the short measurement of the case, not only of second but of first-class brands, and importers have in many instances of late been subjected to serious losses from this cause. In liquids we hear of trade sales of geneva at 10s. Byass's stout has been disposed ofin bond a.t'7s Od. About 400 cases of Hennessy's brandy have been placed in parcels at up to 2Gs 3d, and about 25 hogsheads of Martell's dark brandy have been sold oii private terms.
