A " strange aflair"is reported by the ■" Ovens Advertiser, which says : — '" On Thursday afternoon a capture which has created some little excitement was made by detective O'Leary, at Wangavatta. It appeal's that a man, who gave the name of Burns, has been about that township on a drunken spree for some days, and while " in his cups " he asserted that he was Stephens the Fenian Head-centre. This was, of course, looked upon as mere bravado, but the most astonishing part of the affair is, that when arrested by the detective the sum of about L4OO was found sewn up in his clothing, all of which consisted of English and American gold coins. Of course, the idea of this person being the veritable Stephens is simply ridiculous" but the fact of such an amount of money as this being found in his possession, and the drunken statements made by him, have aroused suspicions as to his character and business. We learn from Adelaide that Major War burton has returned to Levi's out- - station in the far north for provisions. He has traced a large river running into Lake. Eyre, 100 miles from Mount Margaret. He ran it up for 300 miles north. No doubt this is the river mentioned by Jervis last year. We have to record the death, through apoplexy, of Captain Dana, superintendent of police at Geelong, and a public servant for 24 years. Councillor W. Williams has been elected Mayor of Melbourne, and Mr John De Bruce Jolmstono Mayor of Geelong. Both elections were unauimous.
