Per John and Jane, fcr . Melbourne : 15 tons coal.
The favorite paddle steamer Bruce arrived in the river yesterday morning from Hoki\tika, en route for the Buller. She brought 44 passengers, of whom 24 were for the Buller. She sails this moiriing, and takes a - Considerable number of passengers bound for Pjddhi^diggings. schooner Emerald Isle put into this on Thursday through stress of weather. was bound to I\ r clsnn from the Buller, was driven to the southward. She is now loading for the Pakihi, and having preW viously landed cargo there shippers will find f her a suitable vessel for the trade. Great anxiety still prevails concerning the fate of the s.s. Wm. Miskin. On Wednesday her agents at Hokitika received a telegram from the Bluff, stating that the Lord Ashley had reported seeing the Miskin off Caswell Sound. It was expected that the missing steamer w.onld have put in an appearance on Thursday, but she has not yet arrived. The steamer Alexandra, which arrived at Hokitika on Thursday evening, reports no sign of any steamer along the coast, and it has begun to be imagined that the captain of the Lord Ashley made a mis- _ take. It is fervently to be hoped that the steamer will set all doubts at rest by her safe arrival ; should she not do so in another day or two we understand it is tho intention of Mr Commissioner Sale to despatch a vessel in search . The A.S.N. Co.'s steamer Alexandra, which arrived at Hokitika on Thursday . evening, brought 144 passengers from MclShe left on the 19th inst, wfr Any hopes that may have been entertained of seeing the Thane afloat again are now in , vain, the unfortunate vessel having com,,^menced to break up. The sea has smashed .vi£*fp|her plates on the weather side, broken her • A; " -Hps, arid otherwise dislocated her frame work. Her purchaser, Mr Kilgpur, is rapidly dismantling her, and in a few days nothing but the hull will remain. The schooner Phojnix, for Okarita, left Dunedin on the 14th iust. The Elizabeth Curie, Julia, and Lapwing, from Hokitika, arrived at Dunedin on the 14eh inst. The Caledonia, schooner, sailed from Dunedin for this port on the 14th inst, in company with the Phoenix. They proceeded about eight miles to the northward when they were caught in a heavy N.E. breeze, which compelled them to put back to the Heads, where they remained to an early hour on the morning of the lGth, when they took their departure, The three-masted schooner Little Fred, which left Manukau on the 12th iust., arrived at Hokitika on the 24th . Thes.s. Beautiful Star, from Syclne}', ark rived at Hokitika, en route for Wellington, .pnJSediicsday after a passage of seven days, she brought 2S passengers, but no cargo. We notice that the contractor for re-fitting the p.s. Persevere has undertaken 'to have $he repairs completed, and the steamer ready jor sea in 10 days. The late freshes in the Okarita River have greatly improved the channel, leaving a straight' and navigable entrance ; the southern channel, whiyh was difficult of i::;yigatipn, haying closed up. The following report of a case against the Captain of the Albion, has been forwarded to us from the Bluff. It is to be hoped the Government will remit the fine, as" clearly the Captain was unaware of the mail-bag being on board: — "A case of considerable interest to captains, mail agents, and pursers of steamers, was heard at the Resident Magistrate's Court Campbclltown, on • clay, the 17th inst. Captain Kidney, of the O.C. s.s. Albion, was summoned by the Postmaster at Campbelltowu for the nondelivery of mails at Campbelltown on the 21st July last. 3t-appcaml from the evidence of the plaintiff that a mail-bag from Wellington was carried on to Melbourne inof being landed at the Bluff. But the |HHkmtiff failed to prove the delivery of the to defendant, or to any of on board the ship. For the de- v the purser, Landed a' for all the mails received Post Offices ; also delivery of all the Office way-bills, mail-bag was j ut ar.d that vhcfrbu to Hobr that liable
mifcted that the bag was on board the ship, hs would be oblige:! to inflict a penalty ; b-it as the negligence of the Post Office department was quite apparent, in not cnteii.ig the bag on the way-bill, he would inflict the lowest penalty — viz., LlO without costs." A meeting of -the City of. Dunedin (steamer) Relief Fund was held" yesterday afternoon, at the Athenreum, to decide what shouH be done with the balance of the fund. Mr Jones was in the chair ; and the other membbrs present were Messrs E. B. Cargill, P>. B. Martin, (treasurer), John Bathgate, H. Hought™, H. J. Miller (hon. see.), and Captains Dickie and M'ivinnon. It was reported by the Treasurer that the balance in the Bank (including a deposit of LS00) was LII6S 14s Id, which, with the interest due on November Ist L 32, made a total of LI2OO 14s Id available.— The list of those left distitute, or ia distress, by the wreck, was gone through carefully by the Committe ; and various sums were voted to those of them who arc still in waiit, or who were considered deserving of sssutuice. There then remained au unappropriated balance of L 345 14s Id ; and it was resolved that the sum should be invested, under the name of " The City of Dunedin Relief Fund, for the benefit of such persons as may hereafter be rendered destitute by shipwreck.". The following gentlemen we.c appointed trustees of the fund : — Mr Jones, Mr Martin, Captain M'Kinnon. | and Mr Miller.— Dnily Times, Oct. 19.
