The statements that much distress exists in Auckland are unfortunately confirmed in a statement made by the Rev. Mr Bree, at a recent meeting held there of the Ncav Zealand Diocesan Synod. In moving the folloAving resolution, A'iz.:—" That this Synod, having regard to the extent of distress existing in the district of Auckland, do formerly repre- ' gent tho existence of such distress to the x Provincial GoA-ernment; inviting attention to the same, and proffering its assistance towards any fitting plan that may be adopted by the Government and the public for alleviating such distress." He said that many persons bad endeavored to pooh-pooh the subject as to the state of the poor. The public of Auckland were left in a state Of ignorance as to the distressed condition of the people. He read returns supplied from the Government RelieAnug-onice, shoAving the rations issued to the poor in the first six months of the year. In January, BOIS rations were given but, and in the other months more or loss rations Averc distributed. In June the rations distributed amounted to SOOO. He spoke of the efforts made by the BeneA'oleut Society to relieve distress, and the good they had done. With all the destitution in the city persons would step forward and say there Avas only a fractional amount of distress. The relief given was only a supplementary assistance. Thousands had been subsisting on no other relief than the bread and soup given out, After a lengthened discussion, it Avas ultimately agreed that the Standing Committee should be requested to take the Avhole subject of the relief of the poor into consideration, and to adopt such measures as they might consider necessary to meet the present distress ; and for that purpose to associate with tbemseh'es and with as many other persons as they might think proper, It may interest old Wakatip miners in this district to learn that gold Las been struck on- the beach and terraces bordering the Like, at about two miles distance from Queenstown. Ab much as l^oz. of gold for tAvo days' Ayork has been obtained by tAyo men, The accounts from tho quartz reefs are favorable, and most of the companies are lu.sily pushing on their operations. ' ;
