The "BallaratStar" reports :— "About one o'clock on the morning of Sunday, the 16th September, Mr Thomas Dalveen's Criterion Hotel, Preston-hill, Carngham, was burned down, and so rapid did the flames spread, that, although there were several persons in the hotel at the time, it was with considerable difficulty, that the furniture was saved, The premises were insured for £700, one half of the policy being with the Liverpool and London and Globe Insurance Company, and the other half with the Imperial Insurance.
