Otago. —The Daily Times, of the 27thult., reports as follows : — • The business of the" past week hr.s in every department more or less of quietne: s, though considering^ the season and the dulness : which usually prevails jr et before and after the departure of the Home maih, it has not been worse than might have been expected. The exports have been rather heavier than usual, though with no item of magnitude, and the orders still to go- forward, will ensure a little business for the next few days. The market for breadstuff's' is languid, and no- large sales of imported have taken place ; Che value of Ohi'iin and Ga'if« rn'a'i is Llo toLIS 10s; and for.Adeldde, Ll9 t> Ll9 10s. The i cr ;rgo of : the Rachel is still in importers' hands, Understood to be unbroken. Provincial flour is now in good supply, particularly in-the country districts. . The market for maltliquors, both in bulk and bottle, is without animation and chiefly among second houses, importers" doing nothing of ar.y moment. The "aspect "of the "mai&et'for provisions is still unsteady, .though holders are making no concession in value j it has- not transpiie I that a single parcel of any magnitude has been quitted. In sugars there is nothing doing, purchasers waiting for Tues-' day's aubtion sale] "Teas have been in fair demand, and a gradual lesseriingof stock is perceptible ; rates.are, however, Avithout im[•rovemcrit. Spirits and wines are in fair 'supply, particularly good brands ;. the sales making are ninnerous but not heavy. Transactions in building materials continue good, and prices fully maintained. •' ' Melbourne. — HheAge of the 25th Augutt report's as follows : — . • _' ' ' The general indisposition of. the trade to : enter into- transactions of^ any magnitude, combined with the attention that is now required, in . the preparation fpr. the putgoing mail, has , tended to make this one of "the dxillest days in. the import-market we have experienced-for some time. Breadstuffs are firm at the slight advance mentioned a few days ago, and some fair sized parcels of flour have been sold at Llo los for favorite brands, and Lls 103 for other town-made Adelaide flour, whilst country brands bring Lls: A" small parcel of Port Macdonnell wheat, of about 100. bags, has been sold at 7s 3d, but this is an extreme price. A shipment of Chilian fiour, consisting of 4830 bags, was sold at auction,^ fetching 'Llo 2s" 6d to Lll 7s Cd per ton. This exceedingly low price is due to the inferiority of the sample. . It has been the round of the colonies— first to Sydney, then to Adelaide, and, lastly, here. In liqiudsth'cre has been nothing doing; except a^sale of Bass's K6: '3 ale at £7, which is now the prico asked for this description of ale. Of tea and sugar we have not a single line^to report ; 'even the sintvU trade sales, which have been brisk of late, have been very slack to-day. Barley -and oats. ai;e. without any transactions of . npW since 'the "fall in maize ; and some holders of Calif ornian oats consider their stocks off the market for the present. Make is- firm, arid sales have been made at 4s 10£ d. We take the following from the. Argu3 (f Vie24thult. :— - - : " In the import markets to-day business has not been characterised much, activity. Sales to a moderate extent haveV however, been effected at prices which evidence an improving tone. In flic market for breadstuffs 1 Adelaide flour is not disposed of largely, but for the fey/ parcels got rid; of full prices are realised, viz., LIG osto LI B 10s for best town brands. . A parcel of twenty tons of .Chilian was quitted at Ll3 15s ; on oge oE fifty tons, placed in a line, a slight concession was, how-, ever, granted. Wheat is quiet, but prices j are firm at, 7s for best descriptions. Maize is more.inquired for, but though the market 2>rgscntsj.a stronger appearance, no actual advance has yet taken place in our quotations of 4s 9d to 4s lOd, 1. Malt obtains notice, but is not sold very freely. A parcel of 1000 bushels has^ to be quitted at. 9s; and for smaller lots 9s 3d h«as been paid* The auction sale of oilmen's stores created a considerable degree of 'interest, in therexpectation pi bargains being .obtained, < owing- to -the decline which has weekly been submitted to on goods of ;this description oi late. At the commencement, some difficulty ■ in ; ; selh'ng was perienced, but when it was once 'understood that nothing! would be sold but at -fitir : and roasdriableTates,: the". ; salo. went on more "satisfaptoiy.'-arid .eiided. in the ; ' disposal, of some 3000 packages;;;; at anadvance oi fully ten ycr.ceut. on preyicus rates ;. and. a much steadier tone has ; be"e*n\ imparted to the maikct in, consequence..: Kerosene, oil has again given way somewhat, up to a thousand cases, best brand^' having b>eri^piaced : in parcels at 2s 9d ;'and for'soo cases of an outsidelirand, .placed ,in a line,' 3s 7id has bera accepted. In tobaccocs, .a parcel of good tens has eh; nged; fends at well on" to 15d. We learn of a sliij-B'.wjt of 50, 000 slates having

found a purchaser.at prices withheld, but said fully to sustairi'current rates. A parcel 0" full weight English-iade candles has been 'sold at lid. . ' •?•■"'!• :. South Wai.es.— Our files are to the -21st inst. We take the following from the "8. M. Herald of that date :— The week opens rather quietly in commercial circles, and no great amount of trade is expected to be done until after the departure of ..the mail. Breadstuffs are slightly firmer. The entire cargo of Chilian wheat ex Summer Cloud, has changed hands at 6s per bushel, terms. , Small sales of Adelaide wheat are reported at 6s 9d.. A sale of tobacco was held at the Australian Bond this morning, and several parcels of faulty twist were disposed of at -rates which afford no indication of the value of, of marketable samples. Messrs . Richardson and Wrench sold by auction to-day an allotment of land having twenty feet frontage to-South Head road, opposite Palmer street, together N with the hay and corn shed thereon, for"L63s. South Australia. —Our files from Adelaide are to the 33nd ult. The following is from the Tieg'uster of that date : — Flour : Prices are nominal at Ll3 to LM 10s per tori.
