"CIPITOMfi OF THuL CANTERBURY GOLD FIELDS REGULATIONS. - Every person mining for gold must take . out a miners' right. . Claims, in alluvial ground, 45 x 45ft. If the depth exceeds 50ft, the claim may.be extended to 00 x 60ft. Claims in the beds, of rivers and creek claims 50ft* in length. River-beach claims, 45ft in length. Quartz claims 45ft along the .course of the reef, and not exceeding 100 ft in width. Atil claims* must be marked — alluvial and quartz claims by pegs or trenches at the corners. Any claim deserted or unworked for twenty-four hours may be declared forfeited, except in cases of neglect by hired workmen. Every discovery of new gold-workings must be at once reported to the Warden, so as to obtain an increased claim. Any person intending -to divert and use water for mining purposes must give notice thereof to the Warden. If no valid objection be entered within 14 days, , a certificate of Registration may be granted. .'■ Superiority of "right to -a supply of water shall be determined by priority of occupation. - - All races must be commenoed within one month from the date of registration. If any I race be entirely unused for thirty days, except when there is no water available, the superiority of right may be forfeited. All right to any race shall become forfeited if abandoned for the space of one calendar month, unless in case of sickness, want of water, or unavoidable absence. Races may be altered and extended 1 with the consent of the Warden. The holder cf a first right to a^ny source of water supply must be fully supplied before others can use the water. And the Warden may, upon adequate cause being shown, reduce the quantity, or equal proportions, to which each holder other than the first may be entitled to draw. The > quantity of water allowed is as follows : — One or two miners, one sluice-head or 40 in. ; four or more, two sluicerheads ; and so on at the rate of one sluice-hea.d to every additional two miners. Water must not-*be wasted, and all races must be kept in repair, and no person shall back the water of any creek, nor race, or watercourse," so as to cause any claim to be flooded. Eight days' notice must be given of the intention to construct a tail-race, at the expiration of which time the applicant shall return a copy of the notice^ to the Warden, signed by the owners of four nearest claims,r assenting -to or dissenting from a certificate for such tail-race. Races may, under certain restrictions, be carried over, under, or. through any claim, on payment of compensation. Certificates for races are renewable annually. ' Notice of construction of dams or puddling machines must be given. No dam shall be permitted to be placed in the centre of any gully or- flat. Li case of the erection of a puddling machine, a. main sludge channel muat N first be constructed, and appsovedby the Warden, said channel to be kept clean and in good repair. . Owner "of dam v is liable for any damage .caused to claims by the bursting of said dam. Notice of the intention to divert any per-; manent creek or stream must be given to the, Warden and the owners' of the claims adjoining. • v Protection may be given by the Warden to any claim for a period, not exceeding seven days,* and for a longer period on giving three days notice, subject to the discretion of the Warden. But protection for a longer period than seven days shall not be granted to any claim which has not been fairly wrought for at least one month. Every person engaged in trade or business of anyjrind within the limits of a gold field must obtain a business license, at a cost of £5 annually. Licenses for the sale of spirits, &c, £10 ; retail, £30! . Sites taken up for business purposes must be marked by pegs at each! frontage comer. The holders of a single area shall only build upon 27ft of his frontage.; but if he hold two adjoining sites he may build on 33ft frontage. Sites may be registered for ten days, fee j>s, which may be renewed for ten" days more. Unless so registered no site .can be held uno.ccupied for more than twenty-four "hours. The owner of any registered site must affix a notice with the word "registered." Subject to certain reservations in the case of auriferous -lands, the holder of a miners'" right may receive a right to occupy half an, acre of land for a residence area. > In tunnellingj a wail of not less than 10ft must be maintained on each side the tunnel, which, however, may be removed on the consent of the party occupying the adjoining claim. - .Extended claims on the. following, scale may be granted on old worked ground :— Two men, 10,890 square feet; three men, 21,780 square feet ; five men, 43, 780, square feet; and so on in proportion. Such claims must be" registered.- ■''_ No person shall thrown earth or tailings on claims; nor interfere with pegs, notices, &c. ; nor take possession of any claim, &c:, unless . the same has. been absolutely relinquished. Any person neglecting to comply with any written order of the Warden is liable to a penalty. " ' - . ; Claims, &c, may be transferred^ such to be duly registered. .. ( * - Agricultural leases on. gold fields may be granted subject to the following conditions : —Every application must be accompanied by a deposit of £5 to cover the cost of survey. ' The boundaries of the area applied for must be marked out on 'the ground by trenches and posts at the corners ; and every area must, where practicable, be rectangular in shape". The rent chargeable shall .be at the rate of five. shillings per acre, payable in advance. Agricultural leases will not be granted within the boundaries of townshipsor public reserves ; nor on ground which upon sutvey may present auriferous indications. And in all cases a public, roadway, one' chain in width will be reserved along the margin of streams and rivers. Leases not to. be . transferable ; without special authority. The Government may carry roads through any land held under an agri-cultural-lease, on giving compensation. And the Government- may also enter "upon any land for the purpose of searching for gold, or auy other metal or mineral, and terminate any lease when such metajsor minerals have been discovered ; compensation to: be paid to the holder by the persons desirous of lniningthereon. ■_■ - ', ": ' Leases will be cancelled if the land is sublet or transferred without sanction,' or if cultivation" is not commenced . within three months after"theiEsue of the lease; or if at any time the land shall be neglected for a period of ax months^
