-OPITOME OF THJii CANTERBURY GOLD FIELDS REGULATIONS. , Every person mining for gold must take out a miners' right. Claims, in alluvial* ground, 45 x 4oft. if the depth exceeds 50t't, the claim may be extended to (50 X 60ft. Claims in; the beds of rivers and creek claims 50ft in length. River-beach claims,- 45ft in length. . Quartz claims 45ft along the. course of the reef, and not exceeding 100 ft in width. All 'claims must be marked— alluvial and quartz claims by pegs or trenches at the corners. Any clsvini deserted or uuiworked for twenty-four hours may be declared forfeited, except in cases of neglect by hired workmen. Every discovery of new gold-workings must be at once reported to the Warden, so as to obtain an increased claim. Any person intending to divert Mid use water for mining purposes must give noti<& thereof to the Warden. If no valid objection be entered' within 14 clays, a certificate of Registration may be granted. Superiority of right to p. supply of water shall be determined 4>y priority of occupation, ■ - . All'races must be^ commenced withm one month from the date of registration. If any race be entirely unused for thirty days, except when ther.e is no water .available, the superiority of right may be forfeited. All right to any race shall become forfeited, if abandoned fpr tlie space of one calendar month, unless in case of sickness, want, of water, or unavoidable absence. Eight days' notice must be given of the intention to construct a tail-race, at the expiration of which time the .applicant shall return a copy of the notice tp the.WardeUj signed by the owners of four nearest claims, assenting to or dissenting from a certificate for such tail-race. The holders of a, single area shall only build upon 27ft of his frontage ; but if he hold two atljoiiiihg sites he may build on 33ft frontage. Sites may be registered for ten days, fee 'ss, which may be renewed ' for ten days' men. Unless so registered no site can be held unoccupied for more. than twenty-four hours. The owner of any registered site must affix a notice with the word "registered." Subject to certain reservations in the case, of auriferous lauds, the. holder, of a miners' right may receive a right to occupy, half an acre of laud for a residence area. . In tunnelling, a wall of' not less than 10ft must be maintained on each side the tunnel, which, : however, may be removed oh, the Consent of the partyoccupying the adjoining claim. Leases •not to be transferable without special . authority.- The Government may carry roads through any land held under an agricultural lease, -on giving compensation/, and the Government may also enter upon any laud for;. the purpose .of searching for gold, or any other metal or mineral, and terminate any lease when such metals or minerals have been discovered ;. compensation to* be paid -to th,e hplder by the persons desirous of miv- - iiig thereon.'
