Sport appears to be pretty good, at Hokitika, -judging from the following paragraph in Tuesday's West Coast Times: — "Pigeon shooting this season is a . source of considerable profit t.6 those-who follow it as an avocation, as the birds are unusually plentiful, in excellent condition and- easily got at. In fact game of all kinds (indigenous to Westland) abound, as the lagoons swarm with water-fowl, whilst the bush bordering them is filled with droves r of ka kas and other birds, which, when properly served up constitute delicious dishes, and even in Apicius might > deem worthy of consideration. At this time of the year the birds are in full flesh and afford capital sport to the lovers of 'shooting, . and it would, be a very pleasant pastime and a great .relief from the drudgery of town life were the Westland forests less impenetrable. There are some, however, who make it their special business to supply the Hokitika markets, and Aye know a party of four who last week bagged no less than one hundred and fifty brace of pigeons, besides a quantity of ka kas and smaller game. By doing so they expended eight pounds of powder and shot in proportion. In fine weather a delightful day maybe spent >by a genial party upon the'Totara^ Lagoon, where we are given to understand eanie is very plentiful." ■ ■- ' 6 y
