(yr v o3i OOK own coreespoxdext.) July 7. The perjury gase (Russell v. Barton) ipfljJbame on again before the Magistrate's on Thursday. The information of a closely written document of eleven pages, containing 28 paragraphs, and. oompri&mg over 200 distinct statements.; but a preliminajy objection: was taken- 1 that the information . did not specify where the perjury lay, and this was held to.be fatal to the case, which was dismissed, the Magistrate remarking - that they had quite enough of these painful matters; the thing now showing more of persecution than prosecution. Notwithstanding this, *however, further proceedings are threatened. Under the ' ' Medical Practitioners Ordijiance," and by Authority of the Otago Medical Board, proceedings are to be taken against a number of gentlemen ". who have been, practising medicine at various up-country townships, for neglect of various regulations made under 'the above Act. It will come rather hard on some of the'iii who haye gradually acquired congiderabje pi-actipe, if they are compelled to discontinue on account of aome mere formality or other. The approaching elections of "Bailies and Mayoys," foy the recently constituted townships up country, is creating a good deal of excitement here and there. Actk - jng-Mayors and Clerks have been apI ;r pointed by prqeJamation in the M Gazette" to superintend the elections, that everything may be regularly and formally done. A good, many meetings have been held to settle the rather ticklish .'point of who is ' to be the first Mayor, and considerable ■ amusement has been occasioned by the speeches, of the various candidates for municipal honors. As more than eight townships, have been proclaimed municipalities, the bonds held fox the Dunedin Improyement Loan have been cancelled in -term of the Act, and this town is now freed from the payment of any interest pn the sum expended. Ag yet, the approaching elections here have made very little jioise — a Mayop and four Councillors, falling to be elected, the only announcement as yet being from Mr J. H. Harris, \y\\o is a candidate for the TOftyomlty.. The General Government "Gazette" contains a long report from Dr. Hector about the petrojeuni found atTaranaki, in which that gentleman seems to think that the oil will not be found in payable quantities. But it is to be hoped, for the good, of that Prftvinc>, ; that he may be as Far mistaken in Ids deductions as he waa - he reported that little or no gold .would be foundojithe Wipst Goast, - The remainder of the Otago members of Assembly left for Wellington by the Phoebe on Thursday.
