In it there are :— Miners. — Sluicing, 1,354 ; cradling, 151 ; puddling, 28 ; dredging, ,42 .; tiumelling, 11 ; quartz mining, 25 ; other descriptions of mining, 85. Total, 1,696. .~ . Other Occupations. — Storekeeping/ 33J ! public houses, 239 ; packing, 24 ; agriculture, 276; miscellaneous, 265"; total, I,l3s.^making a total population Of 2,831 souls. The average wages, are L 4 per week, and the price of gold L 3 15s. per oh. Machinery in use.— 246 crad}es, value -L 368-; 4 puddling machinesj, L 12 0 ;. 99.; hydraulic hose, value L 556 ; C 69 sluice boxes and toms., value Ll,l3o ';.'■ 57 water -wheels, value, L 78 6; 148 pumps, value L 752 ; 9 dredging machines, L 930; fittings and miners' tools, ; value., L 2,268, There; are 668J miles waterrraces, of the value of L 73,984. The value pf machinery used in quartz mining is L 44, making a total approxi--mate value of L 80,938.—" Daily Times."
