MEETINGS IN THE GOVERNMENT TOENSHIP.
On Wednesday evening, a meeting of the residents was held at Ashtpn's Family Hotel, having been convened -by Messrs Simmons and Scott. The original object appeared to have beeii to elicit from the electors of the Government Township their opinion as to which of the candidates before the public was most worthy their combined support. Mr Simmons waseaUed'tp the. eh,air, a^tia Mr, Scott explained tife reasons why* the meeting had been Sailed.. He said it was imperative that they should be represented by a man who would look after the interests of the Government Township, which had been so much neglected by the Canterbury Gpyernmeut. After , taking their money, the Government had erected all the public ; buiM-i; ings— Post-office, Custom-house, Telegripn^ office, and wharf— at^the other end of the to'wu.
