Chinese in Qtago.— The Dunstan cor- . respondent of the " Daily : Times " says : —'^The Chinamen appear to be getting on very well in this district ; they are all fully employed, either working for others or en their o.vn account. The river, beaches are their favorite spots for work. They have "tried numbers of other places, but the attractiveness of plenty of water and plenty of wash dirt. (kim-di) appears to possess a fascination ioo irrisistible to to be foregone. The head man, Ah Teng, informs me that their smallest earnings have been 3 dwts per day for two men. They, however,; anticipate much better tmie3 when the river reaches a low level ; and appear fully alive to the fact of the large quantity of gold that will then be extracted. They complain a little of the cold nights, but at the. aarae time they do not consider it any impediment to carrying on work. There is not much likelihood that they will betake themselves to the ranges. . The snow on- the Old Man they do not deem at all attractive. As far as gold getting goes, they appear very well satisfied. Ah Teng tells me, ' ' Plenty of Chinamen c >me by-and bye. Country much^etter than Victoria,"— which place they represent as very poor, and iinremunerative. The European miners do not appear so averse to the introduction of Chinese as was at first expected. .In fact, by a large majority, their presence is welcomed." ' - • Asr Intricate Case.— The extraordinary proceedings in Angus v. Clements, which resulted in a rule nisi for attachment for contempt being granted against Angus and his special bailiff, Dugard,, the rule being discharged after argument, will be generally remembered.* This matter, in Avhich the police and other authorities in Queenstown distinguished themselves, without gaining much credit, occupied Mr Justice Richmond and a jury nearly the •whole of yesterday.- Clements sought £1000 compensation for the wrongful c Hiversion of 211 sheep and a horse, and for two or three cases of false arrest and. malicious prosecution ; there being, on the authority of Mr Justice Richmond, five distinct cases of action included in the one set of pleadings. The case so bristled . with difficulties, that the counsel engaged* evidently had much difficulty in knowing their real positions ; and the Judge several ' times declared himself perplexed and em- j barressecl. From the time when judg- ; ment. was summarily obtained by Angus i upon a bill of exchange upon wliich ( Clements declared, that he did not owe a penny, on to the time when ih3 head ,bi> the police in the district ( tlireateaed to lock up the unfortunate , ] Clements, if he dared in such presence i again to say that he would assert a right ■ wliich he was legally entitled to' assert ; " thence to a charge of attempting to rescue certain .sheep, with intent the same to- ' steal, take, and carry away, " contrary to ! the. form of the statute in that case made ( and provided," but which" 1 statute the J Judge joins the counsel in declaring to. be : unknown lo lawyers ; and to the arrest of ' j Clements when he again tried to take < possession of the sheep, his undoubted i property, although they had been fictionally sold, and which resulted in holding ■him on the.. ground for three hours, -while l his faithful dogs were being driven off { from the 'sheep, the 'case .has been a liuique < one. The jury's decision yesterday was, 1 that Clements was entitled to £656 10s from Angus— £3s6 10s for the conversion, 1 nad £300 for the arrest, imprisonment, •&c. " Otago Daily Times," June 6. * ( lll *' l **"i|fc^*iltai hl^22.order" of the 29th ■ The TnattolOTMtT^pn^ ;»f „ - ult. says : — " Our specHWijWWßi^jj^us that he has ascertamed on goodaSSB 1 * rity that the search for the cinnabar which was some time ago commenced amongst the Waipora Ranges, somewhere in Ihe vicinity of Waitahuna facings, is. still being, actively prosecuted, and that at the end of last week the sample of a recent find was produced for inspection^ which to an unpractised 'eye had all the appearance of being a vast improvement on the sample exhibited when the discovery was first made knefwn. The present position of the search party, together with their prospects, were not fully ascer- . tamed ; at ;the same time it was quite an understood fact throughout the neighborhood that ample encouragement to warrant the most favorable anticipations had beenmet with. In all probability we shall receive more definite information on the subject in the course of the present week, which we shall lay before our readers in next issue. Since the foregoing was put in type we have ascertained that-.proe* pecting has been goijig on for some time past on behalf of two different parties who lately lodged applications for kj^ses. One of these prospecting parties has, after considerable trouble, • succeeded in tracing the reef. It has been laid bare in two places, namely, upon the top of one of the spurs or ranges leading from the Waitahuna facings, and also down in a gully at the base of the hill. Overtures have been made for amak gamating both companies, and these, we understand, are to be considered at a meeting of shareholders to be held at Waipora to-day (Tuesday). " The district coronor held an inquest at Dunedin on the body of aßelgian, named Anthony, which had been found floating in the iharbor, off Rattray street. It appeared deceasedhad been on the "burst," and had been picked^.up by the police, and" imprisoned twenty-four hours for being drunk. When liberated, he ap f . peared to be suffering from depression cf spirits, and^ seemed afraid of losing his situation, but nothing more was known of him until Ms body %as found as above.. The verdict was " Found Drowned."
