CALEDONIA CREEK.

(FROM O UK OWN 'CORRESPONDENT. I June 14. ' In company with a good many others v I started for iliis new rusli on the west bant of the Grey. On crossing you enter at the mouth of Moonlight Greek, but turn to the right on the track leading to Nelson's for two miles. Yon then come 0.1 the lower end of the creek where the gold is being got; from thence you follow up the track along the bank of this creek, crossing and recrossing, as the bed of the stream is very crooked for the whole way up to' the township. It is a very flat creek, with no fall for the tail water; There-is only a few claims- work- . ing up to the junction, where the stores are placed. On the branch going to the right ia the prospecting claim, which covers a large area of ground.- The creek is both narrow and rock-bound here, and for a short distance above and below.. From the prospects I saw; by washing disMuls, and the washing by sluicing the whole day of the several claims, and the amount of gold from each of them, tlie ground showed nothing more than wages in any case I had several opportunities of seeing the results, arid on ' no claim have I seen more than what I call a poor man's diggings. • The left hand branch is rather better, but being very narrow, will soon be worked out. There are a good many people on this branch.- There has been a deal of prospecting along the terraces, but they are very poor indeed, in fact they will not pay anyone for their trouble, still they might strike something yet. But from the appearance of the country around, and the quality of the gold, I do not hold such a high, opinion as I did at one time, as it is very low flat swampy country for a long distance. Still some are out in the neighborhood prospecting, and although gold is to be got all over it is very poor. There has been a very large population in this quarter, but they : have mostly all gone over the upper portion of the Grey and over the Saddle, that being the great attraction in the meantime. There are about 300 at here, six stores, one butcher, and HSiey are selling stores at a very moderate rate, considering the high price of freight and packing up here. But the roads are really good in their natural state. The Nelson Government, ever alive to the track cut already up -to tlieru^f^iteTKal would do credit to the streets of Greymouth ; in fact, were it not for the crossing of the creek, you coxild walk all the way with patent boots, shorting the distance by a couple of miles on my return trip. I must say that the universal feeling of 'the people up here is Jfchat the Nelson Government deserve credit for their readiness in making tracks.' and other attentions.
