Garret farry was fined LI for haying being drunk Bud disorderly! Patrick Connor was charged with having been drunk and incapable, and Jie was only fined ss, as it was stated that : he came to the- police station to report a rob-; Dery while under the influence of drink, and "ell down in the room, He was detained, as le appeared to have been in the river. |$ Thkeatening LANGUAQEr— WiIIiam BarMoor was charged on a warrant with having llused threatening language towards^. Mary The complainant said 6he did not ; wish to press the charge as the prisoner had :;now left her. The charge was withdrawn. '/Stealing Money. — Mary Russell- was -Charged with stealing LlO, the property o£ .^/Patrick Connor, from the All .Vations' Hotel^ Point. The complainant said— The f: prisoner was in my company yesterday from i eleven a.m. till seven p.m., both on this and the other side pf the river. In the afternoon, . about four o'clock, we went into the All Nations' Hotel, where we remained in a room together for about two hours. 1 was then undressed, I had at the time, in my jacket pocket, Ll4 or Lls, consisting of two L5-uotes, three Ll^notes, a sovereign, and. some silver. When in the room the prisoner saw the money, as £ took it out to give her LI . When we came out to the bar I missed my purse,- and commenced to search for it, pulling out my notes and placing them on the counter, ' The prisoner seized two L5-notes and ran out of the house, I followed, but could not see her, and being informed that she had crossed the. river, I: followed, and gave information to the police. I identify one of the Lo^notes now shown me, as my property, by a crack in the centre of it, but I cannot identify the others. I did not give the prisoner authority to take the money. Thomas Hamlet : lam at present in charge l of TKe All N ations' Hotel, North Beach. The f prisoner and Conner were in my place yesterday from four to six o'clock, and had some drink. I saw Conner place some notes on the counter, and I noticed among them two L5notes, a LI -note, and some silver. Thejea at: that moment broke iir at the door, and I went to"ciose"iC*When I turned round I heard Connor accuse* the prisoner of taking two L5-notes, and she ran put at the door past me. I went in pursuit of her, and found her on the be«'ich, about 100 yards from the house. I asked her to give me the money, and she said that if I took her to the house she would give it to the man. We went to the house, and she pretended to search herself , and said she had. left the money outside, and if T allowed her to -go out for five minutes she would bring it. I let her go, but saw. uo more of her until I saw her on this of the jiver, about an hour afterwards, when I gave lier into custody. Constable Phelix M'Hroy : Last night about eight o'clock I received information of the robbery, and a description of the prisoner. I arrested her on Richmond Quay shortly afterwards. * She was the worse for liquor, At the station I partially searched jier, bnt found no money except 3s, which she said was all she had. .., In taking her to the cell, through 'the yard, I saw she had something in her hand, caught hold of it, and took" from her four Ll-notes. . She said, "there is only you and I present, say nothing* and I will give you half." I took her baokto the kitchen, ; and found the L5note produced- concealed in. her hair under her net, She then said she did take the money from Cbnribiy -as \ she wished to get: away from a bad man. further ; evidencewas given as to the finding of the money,and the prisoner's confession.: / The prisoner,^ after being cautioned, in the^gsual manner,; ? said—Yesterday morning IwaSTM^lie jD-^'fe, Lion Hot§l, and sa.w Pat. Connor there. He asked me outside to have"a diink at another . place, and as we were walkiug together he : r asked me if I would live with him ashiswifeo He said he would be kinder to me thaiT \Barber had been, and that he had plenty of -money. I had a house I generally took in washing. As I was so badly off I took the money from Conner, as he said he had plenty, and he was flinging it about so carelessly on the table. The Magistrate : The evidence is very clear that you took the money, and I think you have acted very wisely in admitting your guilt, as thereby you leave it with me to deal with the case summarily, instead of sending it for trial to the Supreme Court. The sentence is two months' imprisonment with hard labor in Hokitika gaol. ;:
