General Butler.— The American correspondent of the Times observes that one of the greatest scandals afloat- during the late war against General J3. F. Butler was that lie had- extorted 80,000 dollars in gold- from Smith Brothers, , of New Orleans. These gentlemen, at the close of the war,, began a suit in New York for the recovery of the money ; but General Butler, believing that the case 'would, go hard against him, had according to the writer in the Times; given back riot only the 80,000 dollars in gold, but interest, costs, ami other expenses — in- all, 150,000 dollars.
