NELSON'S CREEK'

(from our own correspondent.) • ' . May 23,1866. In my note of the 9th inst., I stated that one branch of the main creek had been taken up, and that two of tlie claims had bottomed, and were found to be payable, and tltat in a few days others would • bottom, when I hoped to be able to make, favorable reports of their prospects. : I have now to report that the two claims mentioned as payable were found to be very patchy, and in one instance the pay-, able ground ran out altogether, and has since been abandoned. The No. 1 party of which I spoke have had great difficulties to contend with, principally on account of their pumps being insufficient. However, they are still persevering, having procured iron handles and spindles, canvas bands, and ♦ by lengthening tlieir two pumps, they hope to bottom this week. This claim is considered to be the prospecting claim of the creek, and will determine if. others are to be worked or not ; but there is a considerable damp on the prospects here, on account of some of the creek claims proving duffers ; in fact there is not, I believe, one of the upper claims that has. been found payable, but many of them have not yet been proven. The Rough and Ready party that 1 mentioned aa having applied for an extended claim on the main right-hand branch, had several objections lodged against their application. The Warden came up and gave a decision on the. ground, which has the effect of keeping the original applicants out of the claim until another one (Peter Byrne, Joe Gundry, and others, and another party, whose names I do not know) have tried the ground, to see if they can work it with ordinary claims ; if they do not find the ground of sufficient value to do so, the original applicants will be allowed the additional area applied for. There has been lately a small rush to a gully about three miles from hexe, in a northerly direction. A good many have left this place for that locality, and I know of none who have returned, except for provisions. There is nothing rich that I have heard of, but there seems to be payable gold in the. gully, as well aa in aeveral tributaries to it. You will see by the tenor of this note that Nelson's Creek's prospects are not so good as they were when I last wrote you. German Gully (two miles from here) is improving. The deep ground has turned out better than the first working, Z 4
