portaht l^^m^^^^^Hß^^bt be interesting.^^^^^^^^^ Gold mining, I need hardly say, is in the ascendant. Every day the diggings are extending, vast, areas of ground are being opened up lower down, and what was a few months ago a busy scene in the neighborhood of the original prospectors' ground is now ■ almost deserted ; and populated only by a few " fossickers," whose predominating virtue is contentment, and who are satisfied to " knock out" a, mere living. A considerable number- of diggers have, with that restlessness fosr which they are famous, left for the reported new rush in the Buller district, but still there areat the present time all the evidences of prosperity and success in. the aspect of the place.,. Bame. Fortune, fickle as she is, seems to smile liberally on all around, the beauties of Nature, assert th^ir right o.ver the labors of man, and I venture to say that there are few scenes in the vicinity of Greymouthih.at can c.qua.l tliis, for pictorial ejfect. The North Beach has many attractions both rural and marine, and although to a pedestrian, the ro.&d may not seem agreeable, especially at high tide, there are beauties to be seen en route which cannot fail to repay anyone for the inconveniences he suffers on their tour. The place reminds me. of Carlyle's beautiful lines — My inheritance ! how wide and fair ! Time is my estate ; to Time I'm heir. The change, or I should say progress rather than change, that has taken place is really wonderful. To an ordinary spectator it must be striking. A few weeks ago beyond Point Elizabeth the view from the sea beach was nothing but scrub- and apparently an illimitable bush, but iioav the scene has changed "to one of activity and business. There are the diggers' tents visible on the terraces, with groups of fine strong hearty men, the beau ideal of miners, working close by, although in some instances tho view is almost I jM m by ih y trees and thick bush which ornament these acolivitis. On the celebrated " Darkies Terrace" the. claims are still paying admirably, and on the " Darkies" claim itself the ground has proved exceedingly rich. On most of the claims in the neighborhood they are getting from one to three ounces of gold per day per man, which fact is sufficient to speak for itself. Some, of the successful diggers on . the terrace have lately been giving away their old " tailings," and I believe that recently the beneSciaires, a party of four, in an instance of this kind, managed to get a pound weight of amalgam a man the first d: y they commenced working. There is great complaint about the v &nt of v ftter all along the beach. I believe that a party of four are construct- i ing a water race from theCreeiin Cobden to the claims a short distance past P|iie old prospecting claim, a distance of . about two miles, and it is expected it will be completed in about two weeks. In consequence of tho lato showery weather, the track that was commenced Hotel about two miles and a half, remains in statu quo, but the completion of the work is anxiously looked forward to, and will no doubt be completed as soon as circumstances permit. The contemplated formation of a company to construct a^ tramway from Cobden to Point Elizabeth" is a subject naturally interests the inhabitants* of Raleigh (Point Elizabeth), and all along the beach the storekeepers and hotelkoepers appear to be anxiously looking forward to the completion of this desideratum. I believe thajk the subjsct is now in active consideration, and that a preliminary meeting is intended to be held at Point Elizabeth, the Four- Mile Bluff, on Thursday evening next. If the enterprise proves successful, which there is no doubt it will, there is every reason to believe that it will do a vast deal of good to the peaceful village of Cobden, and in many other respects improve, both the present position and f uture prospects of the country. • The recent wet weather- has been of the greatest advantage to those working on the terraces on the North Beach, it having supplied them with that greatest of ail wants, water ; but with alj thisi it, has proved a drawback to the diggers on the flat, who have lately been compelled to relax their efforts owing to the ground bsing flooded. . A rather tragical affair took place a few clays in Raleigh, a woman named Mrs having accidentally suffocated her child, an infant about three months old, while in bed. At the inquest, which was held at the Boatman's Arms, Flagstaff Point, it appeared that the mother was quite innocent of all blame, and a verdict in accordance >vith the facts elicited was returned. There is nothing -extraordinary or startling for me to report in this letter. The general appearance of the North Beajeh i 3 prosperous. The number of places of business, hotels and stores more particularly, is daily increasing, and they all seem to be doing a. good business. To an ordinary visitor the neighborhood .certainly seems quiet, and it is so, but this must be regarded as a satisfactory and good sign, a proof that the' numerous parties at work are making money and contented.
