THE FENIAN MOVEMENT.

ESCAPE OF STEPHENS. The report that Stephens had succeeded iv making h^s escape from Ireland has received; what appears to be reliable confirmation^ A Dublin paper publishes the following circumstantial account of the affah-, which, it states was furnished by a gpntlepian of the lughest respectability in Paris, who is in a position to obtain accurate information, and in whom it is justified in placing full confidence : — "I write to give you positive information pf Stephens, which I think will be .tlip first authentic account of him since his escape from. gaol. He embarked from Galway in a small sailing vessel, and after being, out some time was driven into Belfast, where he was detained by stress of weather for two or three days. From Belfast he sailed to Scotland, and from thence by public conveyance to Dover, and 011 to Paris, where he arrived on Sunday, the 18th of March." As a confirmation of. the forgoing, the "Daily Telegraph" published the following telegram from its Paris correspondent, dated March 23 :-. — " Stephens, the Fenian Head Centre, is ?iow in Paris. Mrs Stephens arrived here last night. , Stephens gives out that he shall soon return from Am erica to Ireland. Since his escape from the Richmond Bridewell he lias remained constantly in Dublin, under th« protection of a .Fenian police, acting counter to .the foi-ce employed by the authorities." It appears that the Fenian sympathisers in the south are giving up the country as lost. The " Cork Herald" of March 3 says : — ' f* For the past week Queenstown lias been in a state of unwonted bustle and excitement, owiug to the immense number of emigrants that/ are daily flowing into the town, and last night it was calculated that no less than 3000 souls, who are destined for the far west, were sheltered, in the various lodginghouses in the town. . Each steamer carries its living irieglit from here of over 300 soiils." • It is said that emigration has increased so much lately that the fare to America has been raised from L 4 to L 7. The report that two of the constabulary had been arrested as Fenians has been contradicte&T by the sub-inspector at FerPpoy. .
