The Wellington Independent of the Ist says : — "We learn from a native letter that on the 10th inst. a native woman was burned to death at the Wairoa. Her whare, it appears, caught lire in her absence, and upon returning,- she saw ifc enveloped in smoke. She rushed in to save her property, and I rescued a good many articles from the flames, but, shocking to relate, she lost her own life in the attempt. When, after being repeatedly called to come out, she burst through the door, she was found to be so dreadfully burnt that her skin paeled off. She lingered for several hours, and then expired." About a fortnight ago the body of a man named John Frost was found in an outhouse, n oar the site of the new Bank of New Zea- ! l.uid, Auckland. The unfortunate mar, j who was very old and infirm, had evidently j died of cold and starvation. An inquest was ] held, a:idt: the jury returned the following : verdict :—" That Johu Frost, on the 31st March instant, died in an out-house oif ! Queen-street, through the inclemency of the ! wea h r and the want of the common necessarits of life, and by no violent ways or mea is wh itsoevjr, to tha knowledje of the said jurors." Ti e Provincial Couicii of Wellington is called together for Tuesday, 22nd imtant. : A correspondent of the Southern Cross at Poverty Bay, under date 15th April, writes : — "The ' St Kilda,' I see, has returned for another batch cf Maori prisoners, but — would you credit it ? — they are all ie ! Where they have bolted to remains to hz found out. I hear that Lieutenant Wilsjn i is after them. It is to be hoped he will take : the naughty pets prisoners once more ; but ] this is doubtful: Ih3 cunniug lasca l^ are so . well acouainted with the bash, wliere I presume they have flown to. Meanwhile, I , suppose, the ' fit Kilda ' will quietly steam fouik t'.> Kivpicy." - Otago Qitaktz Reefs. — The quartz reefs n tliiiLaktv District appear tojj^g^igl^^, rusfi^l^^wo^e^^^Bscovered reafs. It vys : — "We were favored last evening by irSnb-Inspeetur Percy, who had just arrived i'iini the locality, with information of the liscovcry of two gold-bearing quartz reefs on he Shotover — one on the west, and the 'ther on the east side of the river. The first i .lined is situated in a gully about two miles ibove the junction of Skipper's with the Shotover. Mr Percy states that, in ascendng the range on the river side of the gully, ;he reef was distinctly traceable in many daces, and several specimens were picked ip. The reef or leader in the prospector's :!aim seemed about eight feeb thick. The >lace vvp-s completely rushed for claims, and me in dispute, at least, is likely to be taken ato the Warden's Court, for adjudication. The reef is supposed to run east and west ; and the story of its discovery is singular. The prospectors in forming a water-race had actually cut through the crown of the reef, and were then not aware of the treasure beneath till gold was washed down the cut channel. Of the second-named reef we have fewer particulars, as Mr Percy states that he was unable to visit it. It was reported to be richer than the oue previously mentioned, and is situated on the east side of the river, near to the spot where those poor fellows were smothered at the Sandhills, nearly three years ago. The reef was said to be listinetly visible for 200 ycirds, and it was 3tated that gold could be seen in the stone an the surface all along that distance."
