Port Chalmers having been created a district under the General Assembly's new Electoral Act, a crowded meeting was addressed there on Tuesday evening by Mr John Bathgate of the Bank of Otago, as a candidate for its representation in the new Assembly. He gave a lucid explanation of his views on the various questions now before the political public in the province, and was very warmly received. At the close of the proceedings a motion to the effect that Mr Bathgate was a fit and proper perpose to represent the Port was unanimously earned.
