VOLUNTEER PRIZE FIRING AT TEMUKA.

On Tuesday morning a number of the members of the Tcmuka No. 1 Company Rifle Volunteers proceeded to their rifle range at Temuka for the purpose of firing for the prize (a silver service) given by the tradesmen of Dunedin and Christchurch to Captain Young on behalf of the company. The prize, which we (“ Timaru Herald ”) hear is a very handsome and valuable one has unfortunately (owing to the holidays) not yet been received from Dunedin. Therefore the interesting ceremony of presenting it to the winner. Private Watt, did not take place. The muster of both officers and men at the time appointed, six o’clock a.m., was very creditable. Captain Young and Mr H. Clinch acted as markers at the butts, and gave the greatest satisfaction, a vote of thanks being passed to the latter. The firing was very fair, considering the cloudy state of the weather. The following are the scores;—
