The Associated Banks have raised the rate of interest on deposits by 1 per cent., but the lending rates are untouched. Eeceived December 28th, 2.15 p.m. Arrived, yesterday—The P. and O. Company’s Ballarat, with inland Suez mail. Arrived, this morning—The Union Company’s Arawata, from Bluff. In the Intercolonial cricket match yesterday McDonnol, for the Victorians* scored 70. The following is the latest betting on the Champion Eace —6 to 4agst Navigator, 2 to 1 agst Commotion, 7 to 1 agst Guesswork, and 8 to 1 agst Darebin. Eeceived December 29th, 1 a.m. MELBOUENE, December 28. The cricket match between the English Eleven and Twenty-two of Ballarat and district, was concluded to-day, the first innings of the visitors closing for 272, and at the conclusion of the day’s play the home team in their second innings had lost fourteen wickets for 179 runs. The match was therefore drawn. The Intercolonial match between Victorian and New South Wales teams was resumed here to-day. The home team, with six wickets down, and 332 runs to their credit, continued their second innings, the remaining four wickets falling for 39 runs, making a total of 371. The New South Wales Eleven then commenced their second innings, requiring 263 runs to win the match. When stumps were drawn to-day the score stood at 165, with only one wicket down, Bannerman and Murdoch being not out for 51 and 55 respectively. Massie scored 51. Eeceived December 28th, 11.45 a.m. Eeceived December 28th, 8 p.m. SYDNEY, December 28. Sailed, this afternoon, E.M.S. City of New York for San Francisco, via Auckland. Latest telegrams to hand from Clarence Elver Heads report that the steamer New England has broken up. It is believed that twenty-five persons have lost their lives, but the number of passengers who were on board is not yet known with certainty. The vessel was insured for ,£9OOO, the greater part of which is held by the English offices. BEISBANE, December 28. The Queensland Government has concluded a contract on the land grant system with an Australian syndicate for the construction of a transcontinental railway to Port Parker, on the shore of the Gulf of Carpentaria.
