ENGLISH SPORTING.
The Duchess of Montrose has got into terribly bad odour recently for having scratched, or caused to be scratched, her husband's (Mr Crawfurd's) mare Thebais. This was done only a few hours before the original time set for the race, and for no other reason than that the public had helped themselves to most of the long shots, and so a short price had to be taken about the mare This the noble dame refused to put up with, and so scratched the animal, with the result that she has seen her husband's colors hooted at on every occasion they have since appeared in public. Mr Crawfurd had a wonderful run of luck with his horses at Newmarket. Commencing on Monday, October 9th, he won the October Post Produce Stakes with Macheath ; the Czarewitch Trial Handicap Plate with Edelweiss. Next day the Eoyal Stakes with Sonsie Lass, a daughter, by-thc-bye of Apremont's sire Mortimer ; the Czarewitch Stakes with Corrie Eoy. On the Wednesday, the Middle Park Plate with Macheath. On the Thursday Keir walked over for the Ashley Stakes, and the Champion Stakes Thebais divided with Tristan after a dead heat, and next day won the Great Challenge Stakes with another two-year-old, Energy. Mr Crawfurd therefore altogether must have made a good week of it. On the last day of the meeting Shrewsbury, Bst 31b, won the Newmarket Derby; Palermo, Bst 31b, second; Dutch Oven, 9st, third. The day previous Kermesse defeated Eozelle and Little Sister in the Newmarket Oaks. Kermesse, Nellie and Shotover alone went for the Select Stakes at Newmarket, and resulted in a dead heat with the two former, Shotover finishing a length from the pair. Kermesse afterwards walked over, and the stakes were divided. Owing to the luck lately attending Mr Crawfurd's horses has caused him to withdraw from sale Corrie Eoy, Macheath, Thebais, and St. Marguerite. By his Middle Park victory Macheath proved himself the best youngster of his age that has been seen in public this season. Grave doubts are, however, entertained of the colt standing his Derby preparatica. The patron of Maaton, the " Sportsman" says, is not the sole owner in the colt, but that Alec Taylor retains some interest in him. The number of runners for this year's Cesarewitch was less than had gone to the post since Cruiskeen won the event in the year of its inauguration in 1839. At Sandown Park, Lord Cadogan's Goldfield appropriated the Sapling Stakes, and Mr Crawfurd's Eecluse the Juvenile Stakes.
After a spell of a week at the NewmarketHoughton meeting, Mr Crawfurd was again very successful:' On the Monday, with Macheath, he first appropriated the Criterion Stakes, and Recluse then walked over for the Home-bred Post Produce Stakes. St. Marguerite failed him in the Cambridgeshire, won by Slackness, and Energy also sustained a defeat in the Dewhurst Plate, won by Mr C. J. Lefevre's b c Ladislas, Bst 01b, by Hampton—Lady Superior ; Goldfield, Bst 131 b, second. On the Thursday, however, his four-year-old colt Martini cantered in for the Subscription Stakes, and Lovely won the Nursery Handicap Plate. On the Eriday the champion two-year-old Macheath, 9st 31b, sustained a defeat in the Post Sweepstakes by Mr J. H. Holdsworth's filly Adriana, 9st, by Adventurer —Adriana. The betting at the start was 11 to 4 on Mr Crawfurd's colt, but the filly won in |a canter by three-quarters of a length. Mr Crawfurd's successes, however, were not all finished for on the same day. Keir won the Houghton Stakes, and Recluse walked over for the Homebred Post Stakes. On the same day two great surprises occurred, first in Scobell defeating Geheimniss and Kermesse in the All-Aged Stakes, and Chippendale, 9st 2lb, carrying off the Jockey Club Cup, Corrie Roy, 9st 21b, unplaced. City Arab, 7st 121 ■, and Tristan, Sst 121 b, ran a dead heat for second place. Kermesse, some of whose successors are noted above, has not been seen in public since she won the Middle Park Plate last year, the mare being prevented from meeting her engagements owing to smashing a fetlock in the spring. Rayon d'Or (half-brother to the Middle Park new sire, Apremont) arrived in America safe and sound. Potosi, an own brother to the great Eoxhall, ran in the Clarewell Stakes, won by Hauteur, but from the form shown by this colt he is not likely to ever make the racehorse his brother did.
[ Tom Cannon takes the place of trainer recently heldbyPincus.withMrLorillard's horses. That gentleman has recently sent over another batch of eight animals to represent him next year. The eight include the three-year-old Pinafore, the two-year-old Parthcnia, and six yearlings. The latter are spoken of as an extremely nice lot. Pinafore, by Enquirer, dam Mollie Rogers, by imported Sovereign, and Parthenia, by Alarm, dam Marden, wore the two best of their respective years running this season in America. The latter is half sister to Parole.
