The arrival of the first-class iron clipper barque Cingalese yesterday adds another handsome vessel to the shipping owned in this city. The Cingalese was purchased recently by Mr C. W. Turner, the owner of several fine vessels in the foreign going and coastal trade. The vessel which forms the subject of this notice is his latest acquisition, and from her appearance she should prove one of the crack ships of the port. The name of her builders is a sufficient guarantee of her strength. She is essentially a cargo carrying ship, and amongst such is superior to a great many, carrying an unusually large cargo on a small draught. Her upper deck is exceptionally roomy. There is a small iron deck house forward and a half poop aft, leaving an immense deck space clear, for a vessel of her tonnage. Her register' is 697 tons, and she can carry 1050 tons d°ad-weight on a draught of 15ft 6in. She is shallow compared with her length, her measurements being 197 ft long, 32ft beam, and but 17ft depth of hold. She was launched on the Clyde in 1870 by the London and Glasgow Engineering and Shipbuilding Company, Limited, and was purchased by a Melbourne firm in 1874 for the India and Australian trade, in which she was employed at the time she was purchased by her present owner. She is thoroughly well found in every respect, and is in splendid order. Captain Raddon, late of the "T" liner Thurso, in command, speaks highly of her seagoing and sailing qualities, so far as he has been enabled to" judge during a too fine weather trip. In the very moderate winds met with she logged between ten and eleven knots, which, 'with a foul bottom and a big cargo, is very good work. In her -deck house she carries the boiler connected •with her cargo, working steam winch; also, what is reported to be a very fine condenser, fitted, it is said, specially for •use during her voyages up to Calcutta from Melbourne with horses. As stated, the vessel is in beautiful order, everything about her indicating a sense of pride in her by the master. The Cingalese left Calcutta on the 18th of October, and was thus sixtyfive days on the trip. She crossed the Equator on November Bth in 92.42 east longitude, the meridian of Cape Leuwin on December 4th in 46 south latitude, and made Nugget Point last Monday. Since then, up the coast, meeting with light variable winds. She was towed direct from sea on arrival and berthed at one of the jetties. After landing her cargo she •will probably be docked.
