POPULAR AMUSEMENT ASSOCIATION.
A meetingt>jE the committee of the above asseeiation was held yesterday afternoon at four o'clock. Present —Mr S. P. Andrews (in the chair), Messrs W. R. Mitchell, C. Walkden, S. Clarkson, G. Turner, J. Smith, F. T. Haskins, F. Hobbs, Drewitt, and B. J. Leahy.
The Town Clerk reported that he had granted Mr Maddison the use of the association's jumping- apparatus for the sports in connection with the Burnham Industrial School on Christmas Day. The action was approved of. A letter was read from Mr F. R. Dunsford, the winner of the three mile bicycle race, returning the cup which had been presented to him, and stating that he would rather have the money, as the trophy was not worth £3. If the mistake was not rectified he would give the cup as a second prize for boys under six. After some discussion it was decided to pay Mr Dunsford £3 and present the cup to the winner of the second prize, the committee expressing their displeasure at the tone of Mr Dunsford's letter.
On the motion of Mr Mitchell, the special thanks of the Association were given to Mr Smith for his performance of the arduous duties of entry clerk. The Chairman brought under the notice of the meeting the conduct of a competitor named D. Hegarty, who, during the progress of the two mile running race, seized one of the men and held him. He moved that D. Hegarty be disqualified from competing at next year's sports. Mr Walkden seconded the motion, which, after some discussion, was put and carried. The meeting then considered the protests. In the race for boys under fourteen (220 yards), Trej :rrove and Tarpy protested against E. Scrimshaw and Oliver on the ground of over age. The committee decided that as Scrimshaw and Oliver had not produced certificates of age, their prizes should be given to the boys who came in third and fourth.
A protest against the winners in the race for boys under ten was _ sustained, and it that the prizes be paid to the third, fourth, and fifth boys. In the race for boys under sixteen (440 yards) Hobbs and Scrimshaw protested against Hayward and Jones on the ground of over age. Proof of age not having been furnished, the winners were disqualified, and it was resolved to give the prizes to the third and fourth boys.; A protest against J. Jones, the winner of the boys' running long jump, was sustained.
A protest was also sustained against James and William Jones, and Bailey, winners in the boys' handicap, under sixteen (one mile). In the boys' walking race, under eighteen (one mile), McCourt, the winner, was disqualified, on the ground of over age. Messrs Turner and Mitchell were appointed to audit the accounts for the past meeting. This was all the business, and the committee adjourned.
