BOARD OF EDUCATION.

An ordinary meeting of the North Canterbury Board of Education was held yesterday afternoon at three o’clock. Present—Messrs J. Inglis (chairman), H. W. Peryman, H. J. Tancred and G. Booth. The Chairman’s report of business done since last meeting was approved. Inspector’s reports on various schools were read and dealt with. It was decided that the officials of the Board should have the usual Christmas holidays, extending from December 24th to January 10th.

The Chairman announced that Messrs Tancred, Webb and Cunningham would retire from the Board on the 31st March next by effluxion of time. A letter was read from the East Christchurch school committee, with regard to bringing into force the compulsory clauses of the Education Act. The committee stated that the police would not undertake the duty of hunting up absentees, but that if a list of habitual absentees were furnished they would take action. The committee suggested that an officer should be appointed to carry out the duty. The West Christchurch and the Sydenham School committees both wrote on the same subject. The former committee said they had no present intention of enforcing the compulsory clauses, as they found they were unable to accommodate satisfactorily all the children who voluntarily attended, the school. The Sydenham committee said that with the present school accommodation it would be impossible to enforce the compulsory clauses, as the school buildings were now overcrowded. The Board decided to recommend the East Christchurch School committee to furnish the inspector of police with the names of absentees, and that it could not see its way to making the appointment they suggested. It was decided not to take any action for the present in the case of the West Christchurch apd Sydenham schools. The Board considered the Question of the appointment of a master to the Brookside School, and decided to recommend the school committee to appoint Mr Youngson to the position. The New Brighton school committee wrote recommending Mr Murray, formerly of Kirwee, as master of the school. Mr Murray’s appointment was approved of. Applications from a number of school teachers, who had left the service of the Board, for a refund of the 10 per cent, reduction were granted. Mr Chichester wrote forwarding a claim for remuneration for teaching singing at the Hinds school. The Board decided to pay the amount on the production of Mr Chichester’s certificates. On the recommendation of the committee, Mr tioo. Schneider was appointed a pupil teacher at the East Christchurch school. The following benders were accepted : Mandeville school, Mr Gulliver, £320 ; Winslow school, Baker Eros., .£3OO 10s fid ; West Eyreton school (repairs), Mr Keith, £3l ; Eyreton (additions), Mr D. Miller, .£36.

Applications for repairs from Southbrook and Broomfield school committees were granted. A letter was read from the East Christchurch School committee with reference to the proposed formation of Phillipstown into a School district. the committee adhered to their formerly expressed opinion against any separation of the district. The Board coincided with the view of the committee. The Board authorised the East Christchurch committee to carry out some necessary repairs to the windmill, used for pumping water into the school bath. The Spreydon School committee applied to the Board for the construction of a batlr for the use of the scholars. The secretary was instructed to make inquiries. An application from the residents of Mount Thomas for an aided school was granted. After transacting some routine business the Board adjourned
