FIRE IN CASHEL STREET.

About twenty minutes past three on Saturday morning as Mr George Bird was passing Cashel House, in Cashel street, he discovered that the place was on fire. In one of the shutters opposite the main entrance from Cashel street it conld be plainly seen that the stock or fittings were on fire, but vefry shortly the alarm was given, and the Fire Brigade mustered in force, the whole of the engines, viz.. The Deluge, Extinguisher, Dreadnought, and also the chemical fire engine, being quickly on the spot. Water was speedily obtained by the Dreadnought hand engine, and in exactly half a minute later The Deluge, under the management of Assistant Superintendent Samuels, was playing on the fire, which, was speedily got under, the other engines not being required or brought into play. The premises in question are occupied by Messrs Craig and Smyth as a drapery establishment, the upper storey being sublet to Messrs Eoss and Glendining, the well-known wholesale woollen warehousemen. The fire commenced on the ground floor, and before its progress was arrested, had spread from the back part of shop along its western side, and from thence through the ceiling into the upper floor. The stocks of both firms have suffered considerable damage, but more by water than fire. The insurances are stated to be as follows: —Messrs Craig and. Smyth’s stock New Zealand, £3200 p Standard, £2OOO ; Guardian, £IOOO. Messrs Eoss and Glendining’s stock —National, £2500; London, Liverpool, and Globe, £IOOO. Total, £9700. The building, which, belongs to Messrs Hallenstein Brothers, was protected by an insurance of £2OOO irt the Standard.
