SPORES ASSOCIATION.
A mooting of the committee of the above ! association took place last evening at the ! City Council Chambers. Present—Messrs j Andrews (in the chair), Mitchell, Walker, j Hobbs, Clarkson, Atkinson, Walkden, I Turner, Crooks, Alport, and Haskins (sec). | Apologies from his Worship the Mayor and Mr Samuels were read. A letter j was read from the New Zealand i Blondin, soliciting an engagement for j the sports day. His terms were • .£3O, or £2O if allowed to make a collec- j tion after each spell. He would perform I as many times in the day as the committee ! desired. The offer was declined. The | manager of the Union Bank wrote, regretting it was impossible to close the Bank on the 16th. The Fire Brigade wrote asking to be allowed the use of the committee room on the night of the sports. This was agreed to, subject to an arrangement being made to hold the committee harmless. Letter from the Friendly Societies' Fete committee asking for the use of certain appliances on Boxing Day. Granted. Mr Crooks, on behalf of the Association, offered the use of telegraph board, &c. The offer was accepted with thanks. The Colonial Secretary wrote notifying the close on Anniversary Day of all public offices except the Post and Telegraph offices. From the agent of the lessee of the Domain stating that his principal felt aggrieved at being slighted in the arrangements. There had been no application to him for the run of the Park for the sports, or, at any rate, not until the last moment. As things at present stood, Mr Elder was inclined to lock the gate at the Carlton and deny access to the grounds, j Mr Mitchell said the committee had ; no intention of showing any want < of courtesy to Mr Elder. They were advised that in the present lease to Mr Elder a clause existed which reserved to the Domain Board the right of permitting sports to be held on the ground. They had. communicated with the Board, and had obtained permission, and that they thought was sufficient. At the same time they had written to Mr Elder, as under any circumstances they naturally would. After some discussion it was resolved to dejiute Mr Clarkson to interview Mr Elder to assure him personally of the deßire of the committee to meet his wishes. The Inspector of Police informed the committee by letter that as many officers as could be siroxed would be detailed for duty at the sports. The secretary stated the arrangements for the use of the Burnham school band. Mr Crooks reported that the sub-committee of which he was a member had purchased toys to the value of £lO 10s and lollies £2, for distribution to the very young children attending the sports. The secretary was authorised to draw £BS for the purchase of prizes. It was stated that the privileges of the day had realised £69. Arrangements had been made for refreshments for i the committee. The best possible provi-
sion would be made for the members of the Press, and the exclusion of intruders within the ring and committee room. Arrangements were made for gatekeepers and after some other routine business the meeting adjourned.
