GOOD TEMPLARY.
At the annual session of the Grand. Lodge at Eaugiora, after wo went to press yesterday, the following business was transacted:—
The report of the G.W. Chief Templar was considered seriatim. A clause relating to licensing committees was referred to a, committee to report upon the functions of licensing committees, and the duties of Good Templars in relation thereto. A portion of the report dealing with the decrease in membership during the year was also committed for and report. The remainder of the report was adopted. __ After the lunch adjournment the Grand Lodge Degree was conferred on Sister August and Bro. Burrell, from No. 231 Lodge; Bros. Judson, Lucas, and Eggleston, from No. 2(11 Lodge; Bros. Eowe, fiascce, and Watson, from No. 49 Lodge; Sister A 11sworth, from No. 190 Lodge. Wanganui; Bro. W. Watson, representative from Selwyn district; and Bro. Eev.fi. Tout, representative for Eangiora. A deputation from the Temperance Benefit Society, the Sons of Temperance, was introduced, and presented an address of welcome to the Grand Lodge, which was acknowledged by the Chief Templar in a few appropriate remarks. Consideration of the secretary’s report was the next order of business. The report showed that there was a decrease in the membership of 911, and in the number of lodges of six. The financial statement showed the funds of the order to he on a sound basis, though the lecture fund had been drawn upon to ihe extent of about .175, to meet current expenses, the liabilities being—Outstanding accounts, taxes, &c., £SI 3s 4d;, representation account, ail Go 5s- lOd; lecture, .£219 2s. Total, £ IGO 11s 2d. The assets being— Accounts due, 21153 5s 5d ; agency, £9B Os 7d ; stock, fittings, Ac., £l-40 10s 7d, leaving a balance of £74 8s 7d. Considerable discussion took place on several lodges which had ceased working during the year, the various district representatives reporting on their respective lodges.
The lodge adjourned at half-past five, to enable the members to attend the meeting’ in the Oddfellows’ Hall. bn the adjournment of the lodge a procession was formed of about 200 members of the Order, which, headed by the Ihmgiora brass band and the banner of the Order, walked to the railway station, and thence to the Literary Institute, where a tea meeting was held in the hall, at which, there was an attendance of over 200 guests. The tables were presided at by Sisters Pring, Brock, Busch, Kcir, JJerbridge, Taylor, Evans and Mardon, Kisses Streeter, Waters and Mrs Blake. The. hall was profusely and gaily decorated for the occasion. At the public meeting the G.W.C.T. Bro. J. T. Smith took the chair, well supported by the Grand Lodge officers and representatives. The Von. Archdeacon Dudley was also present. The room was densely packed. The proceedings were opened with a veoal duct by Mrs Gray and Miss Kent, sung in a which afforded the audience every satisfaction. Addresses were delivered by the chairman. Archdeacon Dudley, Bros. D. C. Cameron, Jn.go, and others. Tno proceedings wore also enlivened by a number of songs.
