ST. ALBANS BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The regular fortnightly meeting of this Council took place at their Chamber last evening, at 7.30 o’clock. Present—The Mayor, Crs. Money, Turner, Blakiston, Dickenson, Smith, Maun, and Bull. A deputation of ratepayers, consisting of Messrs Bowbyes, Kelly, Henley, and Green, was introduced. They were residents on St. Albans and Crescent roads, and stated that in those roads two-thirds of the inhabitants were in favor of widening them. They were willing either to give the ground required for that purpose as far as they are concerned, providing that the Council reinstate the fences, buildings, &c., out of the general fund ; or, they were willing to submit to a special rate being levied for the purpose of purchasing the land. They asked certain questions of the Council as to the area over which a special rate would reach the manner of procedure in the case of objectors, <kc. The gentlemen explained that they intended canvassing the district thoroughly, and they wished to be able to explain matters to the people applied to. The Council promised to take the matter into consideration, and give replies as soon as possible. The Mayor reported that the polling re a special rate for widening various roads had resulted in negativing the work. The report of the finance committee was road. It stated that the receipts for the past fortnight had been J 8231 5s 3d, expenditure J£3l 16s lOd, and the balance at the Rank was .£213 10s 7d. Various unimportant letters were read and dealt with. The clerk was instructed to report on an application for remission of rates. The Council then wont into committee to consider the matter presented by the deputation, and on resuming adjourned.
