fPEB PRESS ASSOCIATION.] AUCKBAND, December 13. • James Crowley Howick was committed for trial for murder yesterday. Yesterday afternoon a man named Roht. Hardy, aged forty, was brought to the Hospital in a cab hy Orchard, a publican, and a woman, who stated she was Hardy’s wife. Hardy was in a state of unconsciousness and much contused about the face, and it was at once seen he was dying. He had two convulsive fits, and expired half an liour after admission. Orchard and Mrs Hardy stayed only a few minutes. An examination of the body after death showed a cut on the right temple and an abrasion near the cut. There is also a cut under the right eye and a bruise adjacent. The lobe of the left ear is abraded, as well as the side of the temple. The left temple and nose are contused. Orchard told the hospital nurse that the deceased had been fighting and had stood great “ punishment.” Mrs Hardy was in each a state of excitement that little could be got out of her. She was understood to Bay that Hardy was drunk and going to stx-ike a man, missed his blow and fell down : ho had been drinking. Ever since lie took to his bed, and on Saturday and yesterday began to take fits. Enquiries subsequently made at Orchard’s Hotel, where deceased had been staying, elicited a statement that clashed with those given at tlie Hospital. At the inquest in the afternoon. Hardy was said to he in comfortable cir--ucmstances and intending to open a hotel here.
NAPIER, December 13. The criminal sittings are concluded. Last night Mrs Hampson’s mission closed -with a soiree at the Theatre. As regards revivalism, the mission has not been much of a success here. The meetings attracted crowded audiences, but, from the amounts in the contribution boxes, few thought it worth while to pay anything. HAWERA, December 13.

Mr E. C. Beale, of the Auckland team -which visited here, is seriously ill from a sunstroke on Saturday. There is one criminal case for hearing at the District Court against Francis Williamson for perjury, PATEA, December 13. A man named Lambert, a fireman, to-day attempted suicide by cutting his throat with a carving knife. lie had been drinking. The wound is not likely to prove fatal.
WELLINGTON, December 13. Two children named George and William Ridyard, sons of Mr Freeman, were drowned in the Upper Hutt River yesterday. The younger got beyond his depth, and his brother tried to save him, but, being unable to swim, both were drowned. The bodies have been recovered. An inquest will he held. DUNEDIN, December 13 Sir Baldwin intimates that he has no present intention of contesting the Benin sula.
[i’BOM OCR CORRESPONDENT.] ASHBURTON, December 13.
At a meeting held last night at Wakanui, it was decided that it is advisable to start a cheese factory in the district. Milk from about 400 cows was promised, and a committee was appointed to canvass the district for the probable amount of shares that would be taken up, and to report at a futire meeting. A meeting was also held at Willowby, and a resolution passed in favor of a branch factory being started in that district.. Both meetings wore held at the instance of the directors of the Flcmington factory, who hold a general .meeting at Ashburton this afternoon.
