AQUATICS.

UNION ROWING CLUB. Saturday turned out a grand day for boating, and the river side was well patronised by visitors and friends of those taking part in the races, on which occasion for the U.K.C. Maiden Fours all the crews rowed in very fair form, considering the members competing were all beginners, and this was their first appearance in public competition. The following wore the results : Maiden Fours, for Mr H. Thomson’s, MnII.R., prize; course, two miles, from Wright’s to the Willows. First Heat. South Bank Thetis W. Feldwick (stroke), J. A. Holmes (3), P. R. Lough (3), W. Hawley (bow), C. J. Styche (cox) ... ... ... ... ••• 1 North Bank —Thalia —C. J. Frank (stroke), G. F. Whiteside (3), G. M. Louisson (2), C. H. Wagstaff (bow),W. Mason (cox) 3 Mr Kcstevm got the boats away well

together, and a good race ensued to the first bend, where the Thetis took the advantage of a slight bend in her favor, which gave her a lead of a bare length, which she increased to two. The Thalia tried hard to get on level terms again, but Feldwick kept his men hard at it, and won a good race by about three lengths.

Second Heat. South bank—Thetis—J. Fuller (strobe), G. Baker (3), D. Wilkinson (2), A. Lo Gassick (bow), W. Pascoe (cox) ... 1 North hank—Thalia—-P. A. Styche (stroke), R. J. Wilson (3), G. H. P. Godwin (2), A. S. Percival (bow), C. J. Styche (cox) 2

At the word “ off,” it was plain to spot the winner, as Puller went array in grand style, giving his men a good dashing stroke, which is not often seen in maiden races. The Thetis had things pretty easy all through, and won by several lengths. Styche, who rows in very nice style, wants more dash, and should make a useful man in the middle of a boat. Pinal Heat.

South Bank —Thetis—J. Puller (stroke), G. Baker (3), D. Wilkinson (2), A. Be Gassick (how), W. Pascoe (cox) ... 1 North Bank Thalia —W. Feldwick (stroke), J. A. Holmes (3), P. It. Lough (2), W. J. Hawley (bow), C. J. Styche (cox) ... ... ... ... ... ... 2

This was by far the best contested race of the day, both crews doing their utmost to forge ahead, there being little to choose between them at the Tannery. Here Fuller livened up, and made matters look rather different. At Pratt’s he had the race well in hand, although at times Feldwick closed the gap a little, hut dropped back again, the Thetis by winning two lengths. Feldwick rowed a game race, and was well seconded by Holmes, who should with regular practice make a good oarsman.
