It is rumored that Lord Hartington will shortly be appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer. have announced their intention of appointing a Royal Commission to enquire into the condition of affairs in the Western Pacific. The result obtained of the Transit of "Venus from various parts of the world are deemed amply sufficient to enable the sun’s distance to be almost absolutely arrived at. A great fire occurred to-day in Wood street. It broke out at 4 a.m. in a block of buildings owned and partly occupied by Messrs Foster, Porter and Company, Limited, wholesale hosiers, between Addle street and London Wall. The whole of the block has been completely destroyed and the loss is set down at fully three millions sterling (sic.) The fire is the largest which has occurred in London since the great one in Tooley street in 18G1, when the damage was estimated at a million and a half. LONDON, December 7. Consols have declined J to 99|. The Bank rate remains at 3 and the market rate at 3) per cent. The total reserve in notes and bullion in the Bank of England remains at eleven millions. The proportion of reserve to liabilities is 40 per cent. There are no changes to report in colonial breadstuffs or tallow. At the wool auction to-day the market was steady, hut for low and inferior qualities the demand was not active. The catalogue comprised C3OO bales.
