AUCKLAND, December?. Thomas James McFadden was killed at Waiuku through his horse falling on him. One of the most extraordinary men in Auckland is Eev. Wm. Comrie, who has lived in a house at the top of West Queen street for forty years. By lending money ho has accumulated an enormous fortune, but the habit of saving has grown upon him till ho could not find it in his heart to afford himself the common necessaries of life. He lived in a ruinous house in a state of squalor and dirt which was shameful to behold. A few days since Comrie was removed from his tumble-down dwelling and taken out to his nephew’s farm at Pukekohe.

The Northern Boot Factory has declared a dividend of 10 per cent. The Native road obstructionists of the road at Whangarei are very defiant. They yesterday paraded, with loaded guns and tomahawks, on the disputed blocks, and practised tiring at targets from sunrise. The proceedings were witnessed by settlers. The price paid by the Waikato Lands Association to the Hon. James Williamson for the Surrey Hills estate is stated to be .£IOO,OOO. Mr Bryce left for Tauranga by the steamer Wellington. Mr Seth Smith, an English barrister, not long resident here, a nephew of Bishop Cowio, is stated to have received the appointment of Resident Magistrate at Auckland, vice Mr McDonald, promoted to be Chief Judge of the new Land Court. Mr J. W. Sheehan, M.H.R., and Mr Moorhouse will probably leave for Napier in the course of i the present week, meeting Mr Bryce at Rangipo, there to endeavor to settle a long standing dispute between the Natives and the lessees of the Murimotu run.

The trade dispute between the Builders’ Association and Auckland Institute of Architects has become more embittered. A public meeting of the builders of Auckland is to be convened. GISBORNE, December 7.

At the Government land sale to-day there was a large attendance, and bidding in some cases was rapid. The result of the sale was a total of .£10,358 15s. Several lots were passed in. Mr J. A. Tole, Commissioner of Crown Lands, officiated as auctioneer. GREYMOUTH, December 7. The following regulation regarding reply paid and collect telegrams is gazetted; — “ Sender of a reply paid or collect message must, if requested so to do by the officer m charge of the telegraph office, lodge a sufficient sum of money to cover the cost of the reply or collect message. Any surplus of cash will bo refunded on delivery of the reply, and the money lodged with a collect message will be refunded when the recipient has paid the charges.” The commission issued to Sir William Fox has been further extended until the 23rd of December, 1833. The following gentlemen have beon appointed analysts under the Tea Examination Act: —James Alexander Pond, Auckland ; William Skey, Wellington; Alexander Wm. Bickcrton, Christchurch; and James Gow Black, M.A., Dunedin. Under the date of November the 2Sth, Sir G. M. O’Rorko notifies the seat for the Peninsula is vacant by the death of Mr James Seaton, who died from the result of a serious accident received on the 18th of November. It is understood that Sir William Jervois will come from Sydney direct to Wellington, and that he will arrive here about the ISth prox.

TIMAKU, December 7. Mr Herbert Belfield to-day resigned the chairmanship of the South Canterbury Hoard of Education. Mr Edward Wakefield was elected in his stead. The Hon. Mr Johnston, Minister of Public Works, left Timaru for Albui-y and the McKenzie country this evening, with a view of making an extended tour of inspection

Archibald Forbes lectured here to-night on the “ Inner Life of a War Correspondent.” There was a crowded house, andihe met with an enthusiastic reception. On arrival here he was met by a number of the members of the Caledonian Society. As_ a married woman named Page was milking a cow, this evening, the animal kicked her in the chest, which caused the bursting of a blood vessel. The cow then gored the unfortunate woman. The sufferer is still alive. DUNEDIN, December 7 The Sorrento, with 5838 sheep, 4223 bales wool, 82bales skins, 5798 sacks grain,l39 casks tallow, and 13,173 ounces of gold, took her departure this afternoon for London, via the Suez Canal. The total value of the cargo is .£130,000.

Mr Caldwell, head gaoler of Dunedin, who it was announced recently would be shifted to Auckland, has received twelve months’ leave on full pay. Mr Bracken, M.H.R. for Dunedin Central, addressed his constituents to-night. There were 600 or 700 people present. At the close of his address no questions were asked, and a unanimous vote of confidence was carried.
